The Oscars Hall Of Fame (Academy Awards Best Original Songs from 1934 to 2010)

Yesterday night, Randy Newman's We Belong Together (from Toy Story 3) won the Academy Award for the Best Original Song. But who won the same award in 1976? And in 1960? And in 1939? Answers are in this playlist: it features all the winning songs at the Oscars. Most of the time, they're the original versions from the movies. Just in seven cases (out of 77) I had to replace them with some surrogates. Enjoy!

(and if you want more, starting from here you will find all the huge Oscars playlists I made one year ago...)

Acclaimed Music Top 20 Albums of 1961

Bobby Bland: steps two, number one

This is a kind of "history of music" project, based on aggregated charts found on Acclaimed Music. It features Top 20 playlists for decades 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and yearly Top 20 playlists (both songs and albums) for each year from 1960 to 2010. It's a weekly project.

Just like previous year's playlist, this 1961 chart is filled with great jazz. Bob Dylan and Beatles were yet to come, rock albums were yet to be invented: Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Stan Getz, Art Blakey ruled. But the number one, according to Acclaimed Music algorythm, is blues and soul singer Bobby "Blue" Bland. Enjoy!

Mojo's 50 Greatest Island Albums

A couple of years ago, in the #187 issue, Mojo celebrated the 50th birthday of Island Records with a Top 50 of the albums published by the label founded by Chris Blackwell. The chart is mainly based on the 1967-1983 period and includes some all-time goodies like Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left, Jimmy Cliff's The Harder They Come, Bob Marley's Exodus, Tom Waits' Swordfishtrombones and - more recently - U2's Achtung Baby, Pulp's Different Class and Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. I made the two usual playlists: one filled with full albums, one with three tracks each album. Enjoy!

Treble's Top 150 Singles of the '00s

Not number two, M.I.A... you're number one.

Last year, Treble webzine charted their top 150 singles of the noughties. Maybe they like Justin Timberlake too much (most present artist, with five singles) and in the Top 10 they overvalued the sound of Brooklyn, but it's definitely a good mixtape. I spotified it. Enjoy!

"If we're really honest with ourselves, we've spent most of the decade on shuffle anyhow. One minute we want to hear hip-hop, some twee pop the next, and maybe some minimal techno after that. Why not hop around when there's so much great music to hear? It's that commingling of genres, often on a song-by-song basis, that made the past ten years unique. Where the '90s may have kept pop and the underground well segregated, these days you're just as likely to hear Beyonce at a hipster house party as you are the Arcade Fire at a hockey game." Acclaimed Music Top 20 Songs of 1960

Let's start the year-by-year songs playlists with 1960. While in albums jazz still ruled, singles are more rock'n'roll, pop, soul and blues oriented. With a strong preference for ballads, wonderful voices and slow romantic tunes. How many young American people, 50 years ago, danced, kissed and dreamed over this soundtrack? Enjoy!

Dead Air Spotify vol.2 - Radiohead Office Charts

Are you listening to Radiohead's new album The King of Limbs? Yes, me too. :o)
Obviously, it's not on Spotify, yet (we're still waiting for In Rainbows...). But on Spotify you can somehow follow the path of its genesis. How? Listening to the music Radiohead were into while recording it, that the band periodically published (as "Office Charts") on Dead Air Space. Really exciting, varied (from classical to electronica) and complex music. Some months ago I spotified some of 2010 charts. Now, celebrating The King of Limbs' happy birth, it's time to update that series. Below you'll find:
- four new playlists dating from november 2010 to february 2011
- a mammoth playlist made with all four of them
- a super-mammoth playlist featuring all Office Charts from 2010 and 2011
Enjoy! And que viva Radiohead!

BBC6 Shortlisted Top 100 Songs of 2010

A song for Valentine (and one for Angie, one for Lola, one for Stephanie...)

Last Valentine's Day, I playlisted the angry love. This year, I wanna take a look at the bright side of romance. This playlist is a big thank to all of you, sweet, pretty and witty girls in the world. You, who make our hearts beat faster. You, who make our days with a smile. You, who definitely made our best artists write a gazillion of nice songs. Dedicated to, well, you. Not always happy-ending songs, but that's life, isn't it? This playlist features some of these tunes. I hope your name is in the list. If not, to apologize, I promise an easy and definitive explanation on how the offside works. :o)
Enjoy!

P.S. Yes, a couple of songs in the mix are written or sung by girls. You know, love has no rules.

The Complete Guide To Downloading #4 - Relationships

These playlists are little, but good.
In 2005, people from Q, Mojo and Kerrang! allied to publish The Complete Guide To Downloading, a 150-pages magazine filled with playlists about... everything. It was a fantastic guide for the downloading era. I think it's definitely worth in the age of streaming, too.

Since we're getting close to Valentine's day, time to think about our relationships. :o)
 Enjoy!

Mucchio Classic Rock #15 USA Harmony Pop 1965-1970 (Top 20 Albums)

God only knows what they're feeding the animals with...

Fifteenth music history lesson, courtesy of italian magazine Il Mucchio and its old Classic Rock special features (published in Italy in the 1990s/2000s). After Punk, New Wave, Dark/Gothic, Hard Rock, Psychedelia, Power Pop, Canterbury, Reggae, Krautrock, White Man's Blues, Hardcore-Punk, Old Skool Hip-Hop, Soul and Italian Cantautori, it's time to take a californian sunshower in the Sixties. In this playlist you'll find the brightest american music of that era, "a sea of sugar, colours and very good vibrations", as Carlo Bordone wrote in the original piece. A collection of quite famous tunes (God Only Knows, California Dreamin', Happy Together...) along with less famous but not less joyful songs. "Harmony Pop"? I think that label was invented by Bordone (one of the best italian music writers). Probably in the anglosaxon world it's called "Sunshine Pop", or something similar. Anyway, a really good mixtape to accelerate the return of spring.
Enjoy! :o)

This is the playlist connected to selections by Guardian's New Band of the Day feature. I keep it monthly updated. Slightly delayed, in order to let Spotify upload the music and include the highest number of acts. On Guardian, you will find accurate description of each band/artist (links lead to the original column).
