Now That's What I Call Music! on Spotify: The Complete Collection part 1 (vol.1-15, 1983-1989)

Where it all began...

Now That's What I Call Music! is a famous/infamous series of compilation albums, born in the UK and running since 1983 to... well... now. It regularly collects pop, rock and dance hits, mostly taken from radio charts and mostly belonging to major labels catalogue. In its almost 30 years of life, Now! has drawn a kind of pop map of our time. A soundtrack with some beauties and several beasts. On Spotify, I couldn't find the official compilations. So I decided to look for the single songs, one by one, creating a big apocryphal collection. I will publish it on weekly basis. This is the first issue: almost 400 songs from the Now #1 (1983) to the Now #15 (1989). Including some names you sweetly remember from that decade, and some others probably you tried to forget... Vanessa Paradis and Joe le Taxi: we meet again. :o)
Definitely, a guilty gigantic pleasure.

P.S. I tried to follow the rules of philology, selecting the song versions (remixes, radio edit...) indicated in the official Now! website.

Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the 1970s on Spotify

To Berlin or not to Berlin: Iggy and David like the Pitchfork verdict

I was born in the middle of the Seventies. So, I never had the chance to listen to - live, I mean - the music of the decade. I'm slowly recollecting it, thanks to friends, books, magazines, movies and charts like this one. Exactly six years ago, Pitchfork put it online. The american website was not the modern decimal rock bible, yet. Its legendary Arcade Fire's Funeral 9.7 review was shot few months later. But it already had that sweet pervert pleasure of playing with little and big names, often punishing the latters. So, in its 1970s top-of-the-top albums chart you won't find Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Tom Waits, Patti Smith and even not Sticky Fingers. It's the tough law of the charts. Someone must be excluded, even if she/he's a darling. And the elected, as you can read below, are no less than excellent.

I compiled three Spotify playlists with this Top 100. In the mammoth, you'll get the complete albums I found on Spotify (original editions, no legacies or deluxes...). In the graduated, I put 2 songs for albums from position 81 to 100, 3 songs for 61-80, 4 songs for 41-60, 5 songs for 21-40 and 6 songs for 1-20 (few jazz exceptions: Miles Davis albums usually have just few extralong tunes). The lite one, instead, features only one song each album: it's kind of a nonsense, because this is a long-playing charts, you should listen to the full work, not the singles. But I love to shuffle and I think this can be a good short cut to taste the general flavour of the decade (and of the chart). You find all of them below the list. Enjoy! (and don't forget to read the full notes on Pitchfork).

Guardian's New Band of the Day (april 2010)

JJ say: "go listen to track #3, immediately"

Wanna taste some fresh new music? Here it comes, courtesy of The Guardian. Since the end of 2006, the British paper's website has a daily column called New Band of the Day, where music critic Paul Lester "gives new groups a whirl, so you don't have to". I looked for the bands Lester wrote about in April and, as you can see below, many of them are not available on Spotify, yet (the available ones are linked to the dedicated page on Guardian's website). Anyway, the playlist is really fresh and JJ's Let go is simply amazing. Enjoy! And, if you wish, subscribe to the playlist: I will update it each month (see below, for more choices).

The Playlist (april 2010)

1 April: Faded Glory
Lester says: "Fans of literate pop songcraft will enjoy this Irish singer's dark tales of obsession and the horror of tedium"
7 April: Nightbus
8 April: Smurfie Syco
"Fancy some hey-nonny-no stadium rock? This lot sound like a jam session between Fairport Convention and Faith No More"
12 April: JJ - Let Go
"They may not have a Facebook page, but for all their online mystery, JJ's light and lovely music is pretty transparent"
13 April: Spencer McGarry Season
15 April: I Am Arrows
"Lady Chann could well be the UK's number one dancehall queen"
"From dubstep to R&B-sampling exercises to plaintive piano tracks, producer James Blake is recasting intelligent urban music"
21 April: Trash Talk
"This brotherly jazz-metal duo could do to be a little less sweaty metal, a little more complex jazz"
"'Lo'-key minimalist Josh McIntyre draws on post-punk, shoegaze and C86 for his scratchy, sorrowful sound"
26 April: Kirsty Almeida
27 April: Blondes
"With songs that last less than three minutes, this London trio prove that succinct doesn't suck"
29 April: The Agitator
30 April: Sunday Girl

Joanna Newsom look at the day she will enter the Spotify world...

Pitchfork's Best New Albums page is a useful archive of the best reviewed new albums by the webzine. The archive goes back to 2002. Here you find a spotiplaylist of the best music of the first half of 2010 and - bonus - one that will help you to see if you missed something great in 2002/2003. Three songs each album: just to taste the records. I will update it on a monthly basis. If you want more frequent updates, take a look at this other blog: Pitchify. They're doing a great job, posting Spotify links for every new (and well reviewed) album.

Gibson.com Top 50 Guitarists of All Time (on Spotify)

An inconvenient truth: I can't play guitar. In fifteen years of lazy training I just learned some chords, some easy old grunge riffs, the Come As You Are (unplugged in New York) solo and little more. Instead, here you'll find a Spotify playlist of guys who do know how to play the six-strings lady. It's based on the recent Gibson.com Top 50 Guitarists of All Time chart, it's almost complete (just three masters - Frank, Angus & John - painfully missing) and for each artist I tried to choose a song with a strong guitar aura (if you have better suggestions, please, you're welcome!). Enjoy.
