To Berlin or not to Berlin: Iggy and David like the Pitchfork verdict
I was born in the middle of the Seventies. So, I never had the chance to listen to - live, I mean - the music of the decade. I'm slowly recollecting it, thanks to friends, books, magazines, movies and charts like this one. Exactly six years ago, Pitchfork put it online. The american website was not the modern decimal rock bible, yet. Its legendary Arcade Fire's Funeral 9.7 review was shot few months later. But it already had that sweet pervert pleasure of playing with little and big names, often punishing the latters. So, in its 1970s top-of-the-top albums chart you won't find Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Tom Waits, Patti Smith and even not Sticky Fingers. It's the tough law of the charts. Someone must be excluded, even if she/he's a darling. And the elected, as you can read below, are no less than excellent.
I compiled three Spotify playlists with this Top 100. In the mammoth, you'll get the complete albums I found on Spotify (original editions, no legacies or deluxes...). In the graduated, I put 2 songs for albums from position 81 to 100, 3 songs for 61-80, 4 songs for 41-60, 5 songs for 21-40 and 6 songs for 1-20 (few jazz exceptions: Miles Davis albums usually have just few extralong tunes). The lite one, instead, features only one song each album: it's kind of a nonsense, because this is a long-playing charts, you should listen to the full work, not the singles. But I love to shuffle and I think this can be a good short cut to taste the general flavour of the decade (and of the chart). You find all of them below the list. Enjoy! (and don't forget to read the full notes on Pitchfork).
