Blood Covers on the Tracks (a tribute version of Bob Dylan's masterpiece Blood on the Tracks)

PopMatters is doing a terrific work in celebrating the 35th anniversary of Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, one of the greatest albums of all time, one of the strongest songwriting efforts, one of the very few evidences that an artist can write great tunes even in its 15th studio album.

On Spotify, I haven't found the original work: just a couple of tracks featured in some movie soundtracks. Instead, I could play the record club game, again: cover versions are available for each track of the album.

Maybe the result is a bit too soft. Folk troubadours and jazz singers, Jeff and Jeff, Joan and Cassandra, they all wore the slow-tempo dress: acoustic guitars, classic rock, wide breadth atmospheres, no time limits, no punk, electro or other experimentations. I hoped to find at least one thing like the Ramones' take of What a Wonderful World. I haven't.

Charlotte Gainsbourg's Lullaby (a good night spotiplaylist from a French lady)

A sweet good night playlist, courtesy of Charlotte Gainsbourg. It's taken from Wired, where you can also read comments for each song, listen to a podcast version of it and look at the heartbreaking Jane Birkin  (Charlotte's mommy) on the cover of Serge Gainsbourg (Charlotte's daddy) masterpiece Histoire de Melody Nelson. Enjoy!

The Last Optimo Waltz (a wild goodbye dance under the Scottish electro-stars)

"Founded in 1997, it's almost difficult to overstate the impact Optimo (Espacio) has had on Scottish clubland. Beginning as a Sunday night slot during an atmosphere of techno overkill, Twitch and Wilkes decided to do things their own way. Over the course of a decade or so, their painstaking yet irreverent approach to DJing would become hugely influential. Matching R&S Records to Led Zeppelin, DFA to Madonna the club has stood far ahead of the curve almost since its inception. Optimo was there as electroclash emerged, as the post-punk revival started, as nu-disco got off the ground and as UK Funky reared its head." (read more on Clash Music).

Sunday night, Optimo made their last dj show at Sub Club in Glasgow. Few days before, they published a "very, very, very long list" of the 250 most sounded and relevant tracks of their 13-years long residency: a crowdsourced list, mainly made by people's comments on Facebook. I'm not a strong nightclubber, my dancing skills don't go further than a ridiculous smells-like-teen-spirited head-moving with a beer in one hand, and I never had the pleasure to feel the air of Glasgow (except, maybe, in some B&S and Mogwai songs...). Yet, I loved this story and this list: the way it mixes disco & techno, rock & pop, Rapture & Madonna, electroclash and even some classical, it's a very varied collection. So I spotified it, finding about 65% of the songs. Good for a crazy tribute party-night, for a personal self-guide of nice djcrafting, for a drunk northern-oriented cheer, for whatever use you can make of it...  Enjoy!

Spin's 125 Best Albums of the Past 25 Years

Do you think that Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list is too much vintage-oriented? Would you like an albums chart more related to recent music? Here it is. To celebrate its first 25 years, Spin just ranked the 125 "most influential releases since the magazine's beginning in 1985". And, to my great surprise, they crowned my favourite album ever, U2's Achtung Baby, as #1. You can find the whole chart here, while you can listen to most of its albums, below, in Spotify playlists. I made two of them: the first one features full albums, while the second one is slimmer, with only some songs each album (two songs for 101-125 positioned albums, three for 76-100, four for 51-75, five for 26-50, six for 1-25). Enjoy!

The Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Time to exaggerate. First Spotirama post was dedicated to the spotifization of  Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Now it's time to do the same with the 500 Greatest Albums, a chart published by Rolling Stone on the november 2003 issue and re-published online in a rather user-unfriendly shape after the recent restyling of magazine's website. Unfortunately, many of the best albums are not available on Spotify: Beatles, Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Smiths, Ac/Dc, the usual suspects... Btw, the playlist is definitely huge: more than 5500 tracks! And I devilishly decided to make it even huger, selecting deluxe editions of the albums. :o)

Music Radar A-Z of Ska

Hey dude boys, it's Kingston time.
Music Radar organized an alphabetic voyage in skaville. It's a A to Z feature, with pictures, video-links, trivia, stories and much more. You can read it here. And while reading it, as usual, take a listen to this playlist. Since Music Radar developed its trip in a double-way (each letter two songs/artists/ideas), I did the same, with 26 songs in side A and 26 more in side B. Most of time, I found the tracks selected by Music Radar. Sometimes I had to work with a bit of fantasy (which song to choose for Dr.Martens or Kingston town or skanking dance?). Anyway, the beardful and skaless last band, is not a choice of mine. They wanted it: "ZZ Top! Okay, this is a bit tenuous but finding another ska related ‘Z’ was a tough call. So, here goes… Billy Gibbons of the ‘Top is a big fan of 2 Tone band The Selecter. Fact".
Madness, Specials, Wailers, Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, Judge Dread. Almost everybody is here. Enjoy the party!

Pitchfork's The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s

Listen to the first chords of the first song in this playlist - Sunny Afternoon by Kinks - and you will soon realize a great truth about the 60s: that decade was different. There was a kind of magic - something brighter, something lighter, something mightier, something younger - something that pop music was able to express in a way it probably never managed again, and never will be.

In August 2006, Pitchfork published this fantastic chart. 200 songs, along with comments, infos and terrific even-if-tiny-sized pictures. Reading it is a good way to spend your spring sunny afternoons. Even a greater way, maybe, if you do it while listening to this playlist. :o)

Most of the original tracks (about 90%) are available on Spotify. As I did yesterday with a Book Notes playlist, I chose to feature also non-original tracks. It has been a hard take. On one side, I love collections made only by original songs. On the other side, without even a little hint of Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, this playlist would have sounded hopelessly flawed. How can you listen to the 60s without Beatles, Floyd or Zeppelin?

So, welcome to covers, especially if aesthetically close to that 60s special flavour. And welcome to live versions played by artists directly connected with the original tracks (Gilmour for Pink Floyd, McCartney for Beatles...). Jump on the time machine and enjoy!
