Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (2010 version)

Info: In May 2010 Rolling Stone revised its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, originally published in 2004 (that I spotified here). Introduced by an essay written by Jay Z, the new chart included a total of twenty-five new songs, all from the 2000s, except Juicy by the Notorious B.I.G. The only new entry in the Top 100 was Gnarls Barkley's Crazy (#100), while most of the new songs were added in the second half of the chart. The full list of songs is below the playlist, with 2010 additions in bold. In the latest update (February 2016), the playlist gained The Beatles & AC/DC, while it lost Prince and Neil Young (who removed their catalogues from Spotify in 2015).

Info: The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time was the cover story of a special issue of American magazine Rolling Stone, published on December 2004. The list was ranked with the help of 171 artists, producers, industry executives and journalists, and it is dominated by music from the 1960s/1970s, with just two songs from the 1990s in the Top 50 (Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and U2's One). NME 50 Best Songs & 50 Best Albums of the Decade (So Far)

British weekly NME just compiled a a Top50 songs and a Top50 albums of the decade so far. As you may guess from the picture, these lists are dominated by Arctic Monkeys (two songs, two albums #1 album) and Kanye West (two songs, three album, #1 song). Quite interestingly, there are some differences between these Top50s and the Top50 of year 2014 recently published by the same magazine. For example, here Jamie T's Zombie makes a big jump, becoming #2 song of 2014 after Future Islands' Seasons (in the 2014 chart, it was only #8). While La Roux's Trouble In Paradise - #6 album in the 2014 chart - simply disappears from the best of the decade. Another interesting fact, these are not charts for old men. Few artists are long-time players, from the 1990s and before: David Bowie, Nick Cave, Noel Gallagher, Blur, Daft Punk. Last trivia: 98% of songs and albums are available on Spotify.

Acclaimed Music Top 50 Albums (and Top Songs) of 2014

Acclaimed Music Forums are not only a great source of individual end-of-year charts: every year a user called Harold compiles an aggregated ranking, based on hundreds of different charts (magazines, newspapers, websites). It gives you a general idea of critics' preferences worldwide. This playlist is made with the last update (31st December) and it declares the final winner of 2014. Ladies and gentlemen, they say we floated in the dream of The War on Drugs. Just a doubt: what if D'Angelo published Black Messiah just a month before?

Rockit Top 100 Italian Songs of 2014

Let's take a look to my little country. Here you find the Top 100 Italian Songs of 2014 according to Rockit (likely the most important Italian-only indierock-friendly music website). It's a one-track-per-artist chart. About six hours of music that mostly focus on the youngest local underground (few old acts from the 90s: Edda, Paolo Benvegnù, Marlene Kuntz, Cristina Donà...) and testify how Spotify has become a major listening channel for Italian indie (88% tracks available on the service).
