The Longest Mixtape - 1000 Songs For You (a playlist by Caribou, in progress)

Caribou gifted the world a 1000-song YouTube playlist.

The last few years of my life have been incredible, thanks in large part to all of you - so I've been thinking of how to say thank you.

As you can imagine, music has been a central love of my life since I was a teenager and over the years I've been introduced to a lot that has stayed with me. I've collected the majority of that music here – and I thought sharing it with you seemed like one way I could say thanks.
I think there are people (one easy shot: me) who'd like to listen to this nice playlist on Spotify. And I guess crazy long tasks like this one are exactly what Spotirama was born for. :-)
So I'm spotifyin' it and I will regularly publish updates on this page.

Slowly, but steadily.

Enjoy!

(and don't forget Caribou's advice: "please listen to this playlist on shuffle")

David Bowie 100 Greatest Songs (Mojo, 2015)

From The London Boys to 'Tis A Pity She Was A Whore, The World of David Bowie to The Next Day, Ziggy Stardust to The Thin White Duke, MOJO writers and staff delve into the history, subtext, esoterica and strange sounds that make up a remarkable 50-plus year career of innovation, reinvention and boundless genius. There are so many remarkable Bowie songs. Consider this the first hundred.
In the long cover story, MOJO also talks with Bowie confidantes and collaborators (Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, Reeves Gabrels, Ken Scott...) and looks back on the making of The Man Who Sold The World (Bowie's "the first great LP").

Enjoy!

P.S. After the full songs list, you find some stats about this Top 100 (charts by albums, by decades...)

100 Greatest Neil Young Songs (Rolling Stone)

One of the most popular Spotirama posts is about the Top 50 Neil Young songs compiled by british magazine Mojo in 2011. Now it's time to double it, literally. Last january Rolling Stone published a Neil Young Special Collector's Edition issue, including a Top 100 of his songs. Here it comes, in all its Spotify splendour.

Some trivia, before pushing the play button:
  • In the top 20 the two charts are quite similar: even if in different positions, 15 songs are the same.
  • Both include Buffalo Springfield and CSNY songs.
  • While After the Gold Rush album is the most present album in the Mojo chart, in Rolling Stone's Top 100 it stops at #3 (6 songs in the playlist), after Harvest and Tonight's the Night (both with 7 songs).
Enjoy!

Top 20 John Lennon Songs (as solo artist)

He doesn't know it, but John Lennon is on Spotify. All his eight post-Beatles albums have finally been made available on the service, along with three compilations. In order to celebrate the news, I made a little crowdsourced playlist, like the one I did last year for grunge songs. I took twelve John Lennon charts from the Web and I counted 10 points for the #1 song, 9 points for #2, 8 points for #3, etc. The result is the following Top 20.
Guess the #1. ;-)

1. Imagine (84 points)
2. Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) (70)
3. Woman (45)
4. Jealous Guy (42)
5. Watching the Wheels (35)
6. (Just Like) Starting Over (34)
7. Working Class Hero (31)
8. Mother (27)
9. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (26)
10. God (22)
11. Love (19)
12. #9 Dream (18)
13. Whatever Gets You Thru the Night (14)
14. Give Peace a Chance (11)
14. Mind Games (11)
14. Bless You (11)
17. Isolation (10)
18. Crippled Inside (9)
19. Cold Turkey (8)
19. Out the Blue (8)

Just out of the Top 20 are Nobody Told Me, Look At Me, Remember and Gimme Some Truth.

Then I spotified it.

These are the charts I built the Top 20 on:

Twenty Underappreciated John Lennon Solo Songs (Rolling Stone) (on this one, I counted 5 points each song)

The Wes Anderson Complete Spotipedia (songs from all his movies)

Wes Anderson is one of the most talented screenwriters and directors of the last two decades, with a style as unique as Quentin Tarentino, P.T. Anderson or Tim Burton. But perhaps his greatest skill is picking the perfect soundtrack for his films, digging into artists’ catalogues for deep cuts and little-known ditties that fit the mood of the scene perfectly. Knock the man if you must for the quirky nature of his films, but they all feature fantastic soundtracks.
This two playlists collect soundtracks from all eight feature films by Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom and the new The Grand Budapest Hotel). Main source is the archive of What Song, mixed with infos from IMDb and tracklists of original soundtracks available on Spotify. The former playlist is a mammoth, with everything inside (both previously recorded music and music composed for the movies); the latter is a 90-minute selection of songs I like and I think that can give you a good idea of Wes Anderson musical tastes. Actually, it's not a "complete" Spotify encyclopedia. Some songs are missing in action, especially from The Darjeeling Limited, but I think it's a rather good collection.

Enjoy.

Fact Magazine The 50 Best Pharrell Tracks

From Fact Magazine:
It’s no exaggeration to call The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) the most successful pop producers of the early ’00s – it’s pretty much a fact, with the duo gridlocking the Billboard charts in 2002 and 2003 with a run of hits that even Timbaland couldn’t match. Add to that Pharrell’s status as one of hip-hop’s most in-demand hook men (and, you know, owner of one of the world’s most in-demand faces). (...) Nobody was delivering hits like this guy. With his new solo album GIRL ready to take the world by storm (...) we thought it was about time to look back and rank his 50 greatest moments as a producer, singer, rapper and songwriter, ranging from 1993 to 2013.
Go to Fact Magazine, for many additional infos & context for each track. And listen to the playlist below, where I collected all the tracks I found on Spotify. Get Lucky, too. But definitely not on top.

Mojo The 100 Greatest Bob Dylan Songs

Also included in Mojo's 20 Favourite Mojo Covers

Nobody talk about the classic iPod, anymore. Unconcerned, the classic iPod still donates you great shuffle satisfactions. Like the black mine did yesterday night, in the car, suddenly spinning Bob Dylan's Ballad of a Thin Man. A great way to drive back home from a night with friends. This morning I realized I wanted some more Bob Dylan. And that I haven't appropriately playlisted him on Spotirama, yet. That's it. This is a playlist based on a 2005 chart by British magazine Mojo.

I found all the listed songs on Spotify, but one: 1965 single Positively 4th Street. I don't know if it's an Italian catalogue problem or if the track is out of every Spotify of the world. According to tags, most represented albums (with 8 tracks each) are The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Blonde On Blonde (1966) and Blood On The Tracks (1975), followed by Highway 61 Revisited (1965, 7 tracks), John Wesley Harding (1966, 6 tracks), The Times They Are a-Changin' (1968, 5 tracks) and Desire (1976, 5 tracks). Some songs by Infidels (1983), Oh Mercy (1989), Time Out of Mind (1997) and Love and Theft (2001) cover the last thirty years, too.

Full list is after the widget.
Enjoy.

Young Morrissey Jukebox

Jukebox image by Gillian Gilby

As you may guess, in his recent Autobiography Morrissey spends a lot of time talking about music. If the second part of the book is strictly focused on his own creations (with or without The Smiths), first one often deals with his personal listening formation through the Sixties and the Seventies. Sometimes, he just remembers what he used to hear; sometimes, what he loved; sometimes, what he despised. I made a booktrack of the whole - the good and the evil - collecting all the songs mentioned in the book that I found on Spotify. From Roy Orbison to Four Tops, from la française Françoise Hardy all'italiana (yeah!) Rita Pavone, from David Bowie to T .Rex, from New York Dolls to Ramones, till the last spin before the rise of The Smiths. Welcome to the last of the famous Spotirama international playlists.

Enjoy.
