Acclaimed Music Top 50 Albums (and Top Songs) of 2014

Acclaimed Music Forums are not only a great source of individual end-of-year charts: every year a user called Harold compiles an aggregated ranking, based on hundreds of different charts (magazines, newspapers, websites). It gives you a general idea of critics' preferences worldwide. This playlist is made with the last update (31st December) and it declares the final winner of 2014. Ladies and gentlemen, they say we floated in the dream of The War on Drugs. Just a doubt: what if D'Angelo published Black Messiah just a month before?

Acclaimed Music Best 50 Albums and Best 50 Songs of 2013 (based on dozens of critics' charts worldwide)

Acclaimed Music community is one of the most reliable, continuous and powerful sources of Spotirama. AM users collect an incredible amount of critics' lists, that they use to compile a wonderful series of charts (Top 3000 all-time songs and albums, year-by-year, decade-by-decade... also available as Spotify playlists). In december, they also start collecting dozens of end-of-year charts. These make the basis of two spreadsheets: one for songs, one for albums. Mathematically combining all the individual lists (XX points to #1 album, YY points to #2 album, so on...), spreadsheets give you two final 2013 charts. I think they work as perfect end-of-2013 critics-friendly summaries. Right now, spreadsheets are not closed: they will be in the next days and maybe AM will make complete Spotify playlists out of them. So, take the following playlists - last of Spotirama end-of-year series - as a partial and essential collection of most-acclaimed songs and albums of 2013 (good thing: all 50 songs are available on Spotify).

Let's write a new chapter of the year-by-year series based on Acclaimed Music aggregated charts. 1968. Here in Europe, the year of youth revolutions (and of the Prague Spring, forty-three years before the Arab Spring). In the US (and in the UK), rock was definitely blossoming. It rules the albums' playlist - Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash at Folsom, Velvet Underground - while soul is the king of singles: I Heard It Through the Grapevine, The Dock of the Bay, Aretha. As you can see below, just The Beatles (and young Frank Zappa) are out of this big Spotify party. Enjoy!

A playlist with Good Vibrations, God Only Knows, Paint It Black and Hey Joe cannot be wrong. Especially if it features some great soul goodies, too, by Ike & Tina Tuner, Four Tops, Percy Sledge, Otis Redding, James Brown, The Supremes... along with a couple of those gigantic tunes that we all have in our deepest memory, even if we don't remember who wrote them (Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, Lovin' Spoonful's Summer in the City). Just four songs missing from Spotify: surprisingly, by The Beatles. Enjoy!

Acclaimed Music Top 20 Albums of 1966

What do you mean you don't feel like you are a pet?

This is a kind of "history of music" project, based on aggregated charts found on Acclaimed Music. It features Top 20 playlists for decades 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and yearly Top 20 playlists (both songs and albums) for each year from 1960 to 2010. It should be a weekly project (though I'm not very consistent with weekly projects). To keep track of it, I made the Acclaimed History of Music page.

Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, John Mayall (with Eric Clapton), The Kinks, Cream, The Byrds and Yardbirds. Things were getting deadly serious in rock (and blues rock) in 1966. And this playlist features some great soul and jazz albums, too. There's a little big sense of Waterloo in it, though. Too many albums are missing from Spotify catalogue: not only the usual Beatles or Bob Dylan, but also The Mothers of Inverion, 13th Floor Elevators, Fred Neil, Monks, Tim Hardin. Seven titles. Far too many. Anyway, the playlist remains filled with great music, proving that those were really the days. Enjoy!

They really got the #1 in 1964

In Italy we have the phrase: "A volte anche i migliori sbagliano". It means something like "Sometimes even the best ones make a mistake". More often, though, mistakes happen to the worst ones. Like it was two weeks ago, when I published a post called Acclaimed Music Top 20 Songs of 1964. Well, it was a really great playlist. But, actually, it featured the best songs of... 1965. Like Bryan Adams used to say: please forgive me. Now I changed the name of that post (and of the relative playlist) and today I publish the *real* "Acclaimed Music Top 20 Songs of 1964" tape. Ruled by The Kinks' You Really Got Me and filled with some evergreen tunes like House of the Rising Sun, A Change Is Gonna Come, Pretty Woman, Gloria and the brazilian-flavoured The Girl From Ipanema. The Last Lunch

This is a kind of "history of music" project, based on aggregated charts found on Acclaimed Music. It features Top 20 playlists for decades 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and yearly Top 20 playlists (both songs and albums) for each year from 1960 to 2010. It should be a weekly project (though I'm not very consistent with weekly projects). To keep track of it, I made the Acclaimed History of Music page.

Do you prefer Beatles or Rolling Stones? I hope the latter. In this 1964 playlist you'll find two albums by Rolling Stones and - as usual - zero by The Beatles (A Hard Day's Night and Beatles For Sale are in the chart, but they're not on Spotify). Same sad destiny for a couple of Bob Dylan records and for Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity. Nevertheless, the offer is good. With the Stones, the Beach Boys, some early pop/soul (the Ronettes and the Supremes), some late rock'n'roll (Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry) and the habitual bunch of masters of jazz (Eric Dolphy - who died few months after Out To Lunch! release - Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, the magic trio Stan Getz/João Gilberto/Antonio Carlos Jobim). Enjoy!

Singin' at the Apollo (not Creed)

This is a kind of "history of music" project, based on aggregated charts found on Acclaimed Music. It features Top 20 playlists for decades 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and yearly Top 20 playlists (both songs and albums) for each year from 1960 to 2010. It should be a weekly project (though I'm not very good in being consistent with weekly projects). To keep track of it, I made the Acclaimed History of Music page.

1963 is the year when rock albums started to roar. The problem is that they were made by The Beatles and Bob Dylan, two of the most important artists whose recorded catalogues are not available on Spotify, yet (actually I found a Freewheelin' version, but I don't think it's really available). Anyway, jazz remained the strongest genre, with four albums by John Coltrane and many from Blue Note Records/Rudy Van Gelder Editions. Two brazilian titles make these playlists even more spicy. But the #1 is the sex machine. Enjoy!

Classic jazz rules this 1962 chart. The playlist include some absolute masters, like John Coltrane (three albums), the "brazilian" Stan Getz, the "mexican" Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Ornette Coleman and many others. #1, though, is for The Genius. This week, our Delorean drives us back to 1961. It's the year of the classic Stand By Me, a title that I automatically associate with another King. Ben E. King wrote it and made it famous, but my Stand By Me is essentially Stephen King's story (and Rob Reiner 1986's movie adaptation). 1961 is the year of some other great tunes: from The Marvelettes' Please Mr.Postman to Ray Charles' Hit the Road, Jack, from Henry Mancini's Moon River to The Marcels' Blue Moon. A 60-minute jukebox that gently plays the soundtrack of exactly fifty years ago. Enjoy!
