The Music of True Detective

True Detective is an American television anthology crime drama series on HBO created and written by Nic Pizzolatto. Season one stars Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles, and uses multiple timelines to trace two Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division homicide detectives' hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana across seventeen years. The series premiered on January 12, 2014, and consists of eight episodes. The series debuted to widespread critical acclaim. (Wikipedia)

The Music of Life on Mars (UK tv series, updated)

Sigh... I know Sam, she's yours. 

Some years before discovering the almighty power of Breaking Bad, I fell in love with the UK tv series Life on Mars (and with actress Liz White). Even if she did not return my deep sentiment, I spotified the music of the series. Now, almost three years later, I updated that playlist. No big changes: just some new songs from the international DVD version (I found them thanks to Life On Mars Wikia) and a couple of tracks from bands recently added on Spotify (the most famous one: One of These Days by Pink Floyd). It already was a quite strong classic rock mixtape from the Seventies. Now it's a little stronger.

The Complete Breaking Bad Spotify Songbook (Seasons 1-5)

As everybody knows, Breaking Bad tv series has come to an end. Now the big personal question is: "Will I manage to survive the Evil Lord of Spoilers and quietly finish to watch the series, without accidentally falling on plot revelations?" (yeah, I woke up late and I'm still wandering through season 4). Maybe I should turn off the Internet and go living in a cave. Instead, I kind of musically autospoilered myself: here you can find a big playlist that collects all songs from the series (all that I found on Spotify), from season 1 to season 5, including Dave Porter's original soundtracks. And I created single playlists, too, for each season and Porter albums. 

There are many good sources on the Web. I think Breaking Bad wiki is the most accurate and I used it to make the playlists, ordering the songs in chronological order (Dave Porter tracks, too: I put them exactly in the episodes they were played in; I have only few doubts on these ones: Smoking Jesse's Pot, Vent, Follicles and 308 Negra Arroyo Lane. Maybe some superfan can help me, telling me in which episode they are played).

Just four years after common people, I finally started watching Mad Men. And I couldn't resist spotifyin' it. The series is set in the 60s, so it is most of the soundtrack. What:

Life on Mars is a BBC tv series broadcast in UK between January 2006 and April 2007. It tells the story of Sam Tyler, a police officer who is hit by car in 2006 (while listening to David Bowie's song Life on Mars) and awakes in 1973. This is the music of the series.

How:

I deeply loved this series. I deeply loved the soundtrack. She doesn't know, but I deeply fell in love with Annie Cartwright, too. I remember I watched Life on Mars while reading Jonathan Coe's The Rotters' Club and I never felt so connected to the 1970s. Still now, every time I listen to Bowie's song my mind sends me images of that old Manchester I saw in the series. It's not the usually renowned musical post-punk Manchester. In 1973, Sex Pistols hadn't played at the Free Trade Hall yet. Ian Curtis was in his illegal drinking age. Tony Wilson just got back in town. In Life on Mars you don't hear the music of a city, but the music of an era. I think Jonathan Coe called it the brown times. In 1973 I didn't exist, yet. I have no real memories of the seventies. Thanks to Life on Mars, this playlist is my soundtrack of that decade. Enjoy!

As a true deeply-in-love fan, I collected in the playlist all the songs of each episode, repetitions included: that means a triple Bowie title-track, plus a couple of Atomic Rooster's Head in the Sky, Mott the Hoople's One of the Boys and Barclay James Harvest's When the City Sleeps. Music from The O.C. - Season 1

Maybe I should change the name of this blog: from Spotirama to Spoteendrama.

The O.C. is a tv series that aired in the United States from august 2003 to february 2007. Music played a very important role in it, thanks to the work of supervisor Alexandra Patsavas. Along with Grey's Anatomy, it was The O.C. who likely brought indie-rock in the teenage world. Especially, the American one. As you can see from the playlist, there's no room for Christina, Britney or Beyoncé. Primadonnas here are Death Cab For Cutie, Eels, Dandy Warhols, Turin Brakes... and yes, Phantom Planet too.

Info: «Lost makes a very interesting use of music. Non-diegetic original sounds are composed by Oscar-winning Michael Giacchino, while most of the other tracks have a diegetic nature: we hear them, while the characters hear them too (on the radio, through speakers, sometimes actually singing themselves the tunes). I think it's a quite rare choice in contemporary tv series soundtracks, where often pop & rock songs are used to artificially comment images. I compiled a Spotify playlist of all the commercial (non-original) music featured in the Lost series. It's a very eclectic collection, with pop, rock, jazz, classical, world, grunge... and even the Iraqi national anthem. I promise I will keep it updated, as long as the 6th season comes to end.
