MOJO 20 - Best of 1993-2012 (Top20 & Top100 albums, voted by readers)

Sometimes you meet a list that mirrors who you are. It doesn't happen very often. Here at Spotirama, it's easier that I make playlists based on artist/genres I don't know or that just marginally/partially fit with my preferences. This is one of the rare occasions I do like (and feel musically represented by) almost all the music I put in a playlist. Thanks to Mojo, the brit magazine, that just turned 20 and published a special issue celebrating the event.

Some lists are in the magazine. The first one collects The 20 Greatest Albums of Mojo's Lifetime, as voted by readers. The second one includes the runners up, too: 100 albums, five per year. I spotified them: just one album is missing from the Top 20 (In Rainbows by Radiohead, #14), while five more are out of the big one: Wrecking Ball (Emmylou Harris), Rounds (Four Tet),  Sometimes, I Wish I Was An Eagle (Bill Callahan), Have One On Me (Joanna Newsom) and El Camino (Black Keys). 

I do love this music, especially albums from the 1990s (most of them I voraciously consumed in the pre-Internet era).

With an interesting sign o' the times: all tracks chosen by RS journalists (in 2011) are available on Spotify. Order is by countdown: from #100 to #1 (with an evil spoiler of the song-king in the image above...).

Rolling Stone 100 Best Albums of the 2000s

A couple of years ago, guys at Rolling Stone compiled their own top 100 album list of the noughties. Last week that chart appeared on my social networks, shared and commented by some friends. So I spotified it. 97 albums are available on Spotify: I haven't found Gillian Welch's Time the Revelator (#64), Danger Mouse mash up The Grey Album (#58) and Radiohead's In Rainbows (#30). Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise is only available in some countries: not mine, unfortunately, but I put it on the playlist. Sigur Ros' Ágætis Byrjun is actually from 1999 (icelandic release), but in most of the world markets was released in the new millennium. 

I made two lists, with albums ordered by countdown from #50 to #1: one is for the tasters (3 songs each album), one for the completists (full albums: about 80 hours of music). Even if I don't share RS enthusiasm for some artists (Kings of Leon and Kanye West, for example), I listened to it the whole weekend and I think it's a good (somehow mainstream rock oriented) soundtrack of the decade.

Treble's Top 150 Singles of the '00s

Not number two, M.I.A... you're number one.

Last year, Treble webzine charted their top 150 singles of the noughties. Maybe they like Justin Timberlake too much (most present artist, with five singles) and in the Top 10 they overvalued the sound of Brooklyn, but it's definitely a good mixtape. I spotified it. Enjoy!

"If we're really honest with ourselves, we've spent most of the decade on shuffle anyhow. One minute we want to hear hip-hop, some twee pop the next, and maybe some minimal techno after that. Why not hop around when there's so much great music to hear? It's that commingling of genres, often on a song-by-song basis, that made the past ten years unique. Where the '90s may have kept pop and the underground well segregated, these days you're just as likely to hear Beyonce at a hipster house party as you are the Arcade Fire at a hockey game." We are so fond of lists, that with the excuse of numerical uncertainty we're even doubling them. So, we make "best of decade" lists both at the end of 2009 and of 2010. :o)

Anyway, NPR helps us to meet with some old friends not seen or heard for too much time: Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Postal Service, the happy country yodels from O' Brother, Where Art Thou?, that exciting Beatles-JayZ thing by Danger Mouse. What:

Now That's What I Call Music! is a long-running series of various artists compilations, released in the UK by  Universal and EMI. You can take it as a sort of history of the last thirty years of pop (it started in 1983). Some months ago, I launched a project of spotifization of the whole collection (77 double albums). I spotified volumes 1-15, 16-30 and 31-45. Now, that's what I call a playlist of volumes 46-60, approximately dating from 2000 to 2005. Enjoy!
