Still In A Dream - A Story of Shoegaze (2016 Creation Records boxset)

Info:  «For many Creation is the label that defined the shoegazing sound. From the Mary Chain through to Ride and Slowdive via My Bloody Valentine and The House of Love, Creation released the records that are always top of any shoegazing lists. There can’t be any article or list on the genre that doesn’t mention Souvlaki, Nowhere and Loveless. It’s a musical genre that was worshipped by the UK music press for a short period in 1991 only to be followed by an onslaught of derision when bands like Nirvana and Suede started having big chart hits. (...) now for the first time a box set is to be released that captures most of those bands together with many rarities you may never have heard before, including Creation bands like Medicine, Moonshake and a pre-Creation The Boo Radleys» (from Creation Records website).

Hey ho, let's go!

Billboard #1 Alternative Rock Hits (in the U.S.) from 1988 to 2014

Not in the camera, Nick. I told you: NOT in the camera.

"More than eight years after first appearing on a Billboard chart, Arctic Monkeys score their first No. 1 on Billboard's radio-based Alternative Songs survey, as "Do I Wanna Know?" rises 2-1", wrote Billboard tuesday. Great! I do love Arctic Monkeys' AM (likely my favourite album in 2013) and I think that's the right time to update an old Spotirama playlist collecting all the number one alternative hits in the US from 1988 to today. Source is Wikipedia. Browsing the list, some forgotten names and tunes made me suddenly remember when I used to spend long post-school afternoons watching MTV: Blind Melon's No Rain, Crash Test Dummies' Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, The Offspring's Come Out and Play, The Cranberries' Zombie, The Presidents of the USA, Bush, The Wallflowers, Chumbawamba... Oh. My. God.

Enjoy.

Jazz Magazine/Jazzman Les Chocs 2013 and Les Inrocks World Jazz Chanson 2013

Merry Christmas in jazz. Jazz Magazine/Jazzman is a French monthly publication, result of 2009 merger between the two magazines. "Les Chocs 2013" is not an actual chart, but a selection of the jazz albums that has been a "choc" for the mag critics in 2013: one choc each journalist. It's a rather varied selection and - even if just half albums are available on Spotify - I think it may be a soundtrack fit for a happy and quiet festivity. As a bonus, always coming from France, more world-spiced, the selection of Les Inrockuptibles best world/jazz/chanson albums of 2013 (if you're interested in jazz, you can also check the Jazzwise Top 20 New Releases of 2013).

Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

King Britt's Sonic Journey Into Afrofuturism (on Spotify)

Don't blame me, blame Janelle Monáe.
Or better, blame US reviewers of Janelle Monáe's new album The Electric Lady (great!) who obsessively used the term afrofuturism, inevitably pushing me to search some other musical afrofuturistic horizons.

And I found 'em. Thanks of Pennsylvania producer King Britt, who some months ago compiled this gorgeus mix for the website OkayAfrica. There, you can still listen to it in all his original and complete Soundcloud flavour. Here you have a Spotify résumé: shorter, nonethless quite exciting for its mixture of old jazzy extravaganza (Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Sun Ra), modern hybrid sounds (Flying Lotus, Common, Madlib) and little glimpses from the nextworld (Shabazz Palaces).

Whatever it is, whatever it will be, may the afrofuturism be with you.

Enjoy.

Los Angeles Weekly Top 20 Hair Metal Albums of All Time

Everybody knows it, Slash, Axl and Maya included: 2012 is the year of Guns n'Roses reunion. So, let's warm up with a hair metal revival. No, don't you dare thinking it's a skeleton I'm taking out of my musical closet! But yes, at high school I did listen to Appetite For Destruction (and, er, well, sometimes to White Lion and Bon Jovi too...). :o)
Enjoy!

The UK Blue Stax Singles Collection 1967-1968

Just to prove you that I'm not Nick Hornby's Annie Wilkes and that I care more for taking some good musical advices from him than dissecting his books, here it comes a new playlist. Actually, Hornby suggested it, when he wrote - in the first pages of Fever Pitch - "We would be left to rot with our Arsenal programmes or our collection of original blue-label Stax records...". Blue-label Stax records? What's that? Here's the answer: a collection of old vinyl records, out in the UK in 1967 and 1968. Below, you find it almost completely (83,33%) spotified. A good soundtrack for your vintage soul parties, with Otis Redding, Carla Thomas and many other great black acts. Enjoy!
