Polaris Music Prize 2006-2010 - Plenty of good young Canadian music

Karkwa: "we just won Polaris 2010 but we're not on Spotify, (canadian) d'oh!"

I just saw a movie called Frozen. Two boys and a girl stranded on a chairlift, halfway up the mountain, with none caring about them but some wolves, well... hungry like wolves. Chilling. So I decided that tonight playlist is coming from a cold country, full of wolves (I guess), chairlifts (I guess, again: they just hosted Winter Olympics!) and great rock band (I'm definitely sure). A North-American one. Not US. Yep, you got it. The other one.

From Wikipedia:
"The Polaris Music Prize is a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006 and includes a C$20,000 cash prize".

Deaf to the evil call of money, as usual, this Spotirama couple of playlists will involve not only the lucky winners but all the shortlisted albums in the first five years of Polaris Music Prize. First one is the mammoth, with full albums. Second one is the lite, with just three songs each album. Recently, canadian people recorded a lot of great music. Here you have a fine selection. Enjoy!

DJ Hero 2 soundtrack on Spotify

He looks like a mad red-mouse-faced serial killer, but he's only a dj.

Let's say you're having a party at your home. Or dormitory. Or fazenda. Or night swimming pool. Or wherever you want. And let's say you want some music to make the partygoers dance with. And they don't like indieclub stuff. They want mainstream. Electronica, techno, old & new hip hop, huge hits, from Afrika Bambaataa to Daft Punk, from Justice to Eminem, from New Order to Chemical Brothers, from Prodigy to 50 Cent to the Lady we are all gagaing about these days. Well, if you really need this, this playlist is almost perfect. It's the tracklist for the upcoming Dj Hero 2 videogame, out in your favourite store on October 15. If you buy the game, you can remix and mash the songs, too. But if you just need the music, here it is. It's about six hours long, so your party can go through the first dawning light. Enjoy!

Vanity Fair's New York Fashion Week playlist

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Definitely, this is not an ordinary Spotirama playlist. Forget Pitchfork. Forget Rolling Stone. Forget Forget and dispute the rock undisputed dominance of the world. Tonight, we're going to a fashion show. Vanity Fair published a long playlist connected with the New York Fashion Week (9/16 september). Have you ever wanted to know which music plays in the background, while those androgynous and bizarrely-clothed beauties walk on stage? No? Well... I don't care: here it comes. And don't be scared by the cosmic jarresque welcome. It's only the beginning of a rather varied voyage, with electroindieminimalworldclassicrockremixed nuances. Perfect for your next high-society happy hour. May the posh force be with you.

Matador at 21 on Spotify (6-cd boxset celebrating 21 years of Matador)

The box

Matador Records is celebrating its 21st anniversary with a delicious 6-cd charity boxset, simply called Matador at 21 (more info in the official blog). Five cds will go through the label's rich history, while the sixth one will include unreleased live recordings from another birthday celebration, the 10th anniversary concerts in 1999. Matador is an heavyweight champion of indie music and the list of artists included in this boxset is simply amazing: Teenage Fanclub, Yo La Tengo, Bardo Pond, Cat Power, Mogwai, Arab Strap, Belle & Sebastian, Pavement, Shearwater, Dead Meadow, Girls... When indie was still a thing more for music-lovers than for fashionistas.

The boxset is made for charity and all the Matador and bands' proceeds will be donated to some non-profit organizations, so it's a good thing to consider the purchase. Matador at 21 will be in stores on September 28, but you can already preorder it from Matador Store for 35$. Worth the purchase? Definitely, yes. But if you wanna try it on Spotify, here it comes the usual spotiplaylist.
Have a nice trip in the world of 100% classic indie guitars. :o)

(Your social agenda is sadly empty in the first weekend of October? if you live in Las Vegas or you've enough money to go there, Matador will welcome you with a live version of the 21st anniversary celebration: a marvellous label party with live shows of Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, Guided By Voices, Cat Power and many more; take a look here)

Top 200 (plus 420) Tracks of the 1990s (Pitchfork)

gold soundz

"This week we're going to be counting down our list of the top 200 tracks of the 1990s. We've done a few of these decade lists on Pitchfork. Last year around this time, we ran down our 500 favorite tracks of the 2000s as part of larger project looking at the decade in a series we called P2K. In years past we've done lists of albums from the 70s, 80s, and 90s and songs from the 60s. But P2K aside, it's been a while since we reached back to look at the music of a decade. The time feels right for listening to and talking about the 90s."

That's how Pitchfork boys presented their latest list, built around their favourite top 200 tracks of the 1990s. You can find it, divided in five chapters, with detailed infos, comments and YouTube links, here: 200-151150-101100-5150-2120-1.

This time, Pitchfork has been even kinder than before, adding two or three alternative songs each track (under the voice: "see also"). So the 200-songs has actually become a kind of a 620-songs list. I adapted myself and I made two different playlists: one based on the top 200 list and one based on the complete 620 list (plus a smaller one with my 69 preferences). You can find the links on the bottom of the post.

Almost each song is in the version chosen by Pitchfork. Just few exceptions in hip hop, remixes, Belle & Sebastian (I found only the live version of If You're Feeling Sinister album) and Pearl Jam (my dictatorial choice: Yellow Ledbetter must be a live version!).

Enjoy and hail to the 90s. :o)
