Top 100 Certified Albums in the United States

Look at the cassette, ain't it cute?

I used to believe that Michael Jackson's Thriller was the most sold album ever. Globally speaking, maybe it is. In the US, though, according to RIAA website, Thriller is "only" #2, behind Eagles' Greatest Hits. They both got a 29x diamond certification, but Eagles' anthology appears as #1 in the Top 100 Certified Albums list. I have not a scientific knowledge of the relation between RIAA certifications and units actually shipped (it seems it's a tricky one), so I could have interpreted the RIAA data wrongly. Anyway, I think it's an interesting list.

By browsing it, you discover that The Beatles have six albums in the Top 100, but most of them are anthologies. That Garth Brooks is very very very very huge in the US (while here in my little Italy I suspect most people barely know him). That Hootie & The Blowfish sold a crazy amount of copies of Cracked Rear View, even crazier than those sold by Alanis Morrissette's Jagged Little Pill. That Led Zeppelin second most certified album is Physical Graffiti. That Pearl Jam's Ten likely sold more than Nirvana's Nevermind, and AC/DC's Back in Black more than Metallica's black album. That just one album from the 2010s rolled from the deep to get the Top 100.

You can go on checkin' the chart (for millennials in search of Katy Perry, Rihanna and Taylor Swift, better call the digital sales page). And in the playlist below you can listen to all the albums I found on Spotify. No Beatles, as usual. No Garth Brooks (my Italian ignorance will go on). No Def Leppard, Matchbox Twenty, Creed and Kid Rock. Enjoy the rest!
