I cannot count how many times, while reading Rob Sheffield's Love Is A Mixtape, I thought: "Hey, that's it! That's how things work, or should! It's really like this!". Naturally, I don't share 100% of the author's musical tastes (let's say, 73,8%). Neither I share(d) a sentimental relation like the one he had with his wife Renée, full of mixtapes, romance, gigs, fun and grief (though I must confess I often long for something like that... without the grief part).
But many feelings and thoughts (and dirty playlist-making obsessions), yes, they seemed to come out of my mind. And many parts of the book, they're so great that I'd really like I wrote them before him. It's a nice book, believe me. There are some sad moments in it. Some melancholy for the golden age of 90s, as time goes by. Mostly, though, it gives you free laughs. A lot of them. I'm European, I have been raised by High Fidelity, so somehow I see it as kind of an American answer to Nick Hornby. With less Britannia and more Pavement. Generating the same, light, witty reading pleasure.
