Pitchfork Best New Albums of 2011 (final update!!)

With a bunch of latest new entries (Atlas Sound, Oneohtrix Point Never, Drake, Kate Bush) and the long-awaited add of Julianna Barwick's The Magic Place (now available on Spotify), this is the final update of the playlists based on Pitchfork Best New Albums.

Some stats:

- The % of albums available on Spotify is very good: 91,48% (in 2010, it was 83,63%)
- 47 albums have been included by Pitchfork in its Best New Albums section in 2011. In 2010, they were 55
- The Lite playlists below (3 tracks each album) features 129 songs. The Mammoth (full albums) features 477 songs.
- The most recent album (Sepalcure, not available on Spotify) has been reviewed November 22. No more highly reviewed albums in the last 40 days of the year. In the same period, in 2010, Pitchfork picked two Best New Albums (by OFF! and Robyn).
- Medium review vote: 8.55 (in 2010, slightly higher: 8.57)
- Higher review vote: Bon Iver, Bon Iver, 9.5 (in 2010: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West, 10.0)
- 11 Best New Albums are NOT featured in Pitchfork Best 50 Albums of 2011 chart: by Smith Westerns, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, The Antlers, WU LYF, Washed Out, Trash Talk, A$ap Rocky, Big K.R.I.T., Cass McCombs, John Maus and Wolves in the Throne Room. Anyway, last four are mentioned in the Honorable Mentions section; amongst the albums in the eoy Top 50, there are 14 albums that are instead not featured in Best New Albums reviews (by Wild Flag, Kendrick Lamar, Colin Stetson, SBTRKT, Liturgy, Sandro Perri, Frank Ocean, Katy B, TY Segall, Beyoncé, Bill Callahan, The Caretaker, Danny Brown, Clams Casino).
- Finally, how long shall we wait before the first Best New Album of 2012? If we follow the year-by-year progression, it should happen around January 25. In 2009, Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion was reviewed January 5. In 2010, Vampire Weekend's Contra, January 11. In 2011, Smith Westerns' Dye It Blonde has been reviewed January 18. But, frankly, we'll see...

Enjoy!

RIP 2011 (a NYTimes/Stereogum tribute to artists/bands who played their last waltz)

Last year, I made two Spotify playlists based on New York Times and Stereogum videotributes to artists who died and bands who disbanded in 2010. This year they did it again. So did I. Even if I'm not so sure Sonic Youth have officially been declared over. Mournfully enjoy!

NPR Best 100 Songs of 2011

This NPR chart has two problems. First, it's not ranked. It's alphabetical. So I couldn't chop it as a Top50, I painfully breaking my 2011 end-of-year playlist habit. Second, many songs - almost twenty - are missing from Spotify. And many are available only in restricted markets. But there is a big value in it. It doesn't feature only rock music (or alternative/electronica/folk/hip hop): it's wider, including other genres, like world, contemporary or classical. That means - along with the usual M83, tUnE-yArDs or Bon Iver - some very different choices from the other playlists I published so far. One example? A crazy little thing called Lungulungu by Fokn Bois and Jumo Daddy taken from the album The Fokn Dunaquest in Budapest. Cool, isn't it? Enjoy!

Kerrang! Best 50 Albums of 2011

Bored with fashion hipsters and sad folk singers? Saturday morning Spotirama goes metal, with the 2011 Top 50 from venerable magazine Kerrang! (based on the official one, that is actually a Top101). It's a very different playlist: just nine albums (by Cerebral Ballzy, Wolves in the Throne Room, Fucked Up, Cage the Elephant, Frank Turner, Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, Machine Head & Mastodon) appeared in the year lists I published so far. And Spotify goes metal, too: 96% of albums available... enjoy!

Polaris Music Prize 2006-2011

My personal Photoshop disaster

Arcade Fire's music is on Spotify, the full catalogue! Let's celebrate with the update of Polaris Music Prize playlists. As Wikipedia says, "the Polaris Music Prize is a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006 and includes a C$20,000 cash prize". Last year I made two playlists, based on all the shortlisted albums for this award. Now, I added the 2011 shortlisted albums, including the winning one, that by chance is Arcade Fire's The Suburbs. Enjoy!

P.S. I don't wanna think of how many other 2010 playlists should I update...

Spin Best 50 Albums of 2011

While including Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, Spin's Top 50 is the first album chart I published so far that doesn't feature Radiohead. So, Bon Iver's Bon Iver and Kurt Vile's Smoke Ring For Halo remain the only two albums featured in every chart I published. Besides, this is the first list with Fucked Up at #1. Enjoy!
