The Mercury Prize on Spotify (one prize, five playlists)

XX celebrate the Mercury

From Wikipedia: "The Mercury Prize is an annual music prize awarded for the best album from the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was established by the British Phonographic Industry and British Association of Record Dealers in 1992 as an alternative to the industry-dominated Brit Awards. (...) Nominations are chosen by a selected panel of musicians, music executives, journalists and other figures in the music industry in the UK and Ireland".

Few days ago the XX have been awarded with Mercury Prize 2010.

I must confess one thing. Though I was musically born with Achtung Baby and I grew with Kurt, Eddie and the other boys from the grunge generation, my musical heaven is the UK. Especially the UK of the late nineties and early naughties. Most of my favourite albums and artists have been shortlisted (and sometimes won) the Mercury Prize: Radiohead, Doves, Belle & Sebastian, Portishead, Massive Attack, Blur, Oasis, Coldplay, Verve, Elbow, Manic Street Preachers, PJ Harvey, Beth Orton, Franz Ferdinand, Gorillaz, Coral... The list is long.  So, when I read the news about XX I decided to celebrate the prize with a Spotirama special. Not just one, but five playlists about it.
Here they come. Enjoy! :o)

L.A. Burnout 1 & 2: a blog-made mixtape from the dear old warm Los Angeles

Wanna feel the warm breeze of Los Angeles in the sixties and the seventies?
This spotiplaylist is made for you. It doesn't come from an old Rolling Stone article. Nor from a Pitchfork "best music" list. Neither from an archeological L.A.-oriented version of the Billboard top 40. This time I found it in a blog, called Acquarium Drunkard.
First volume has been published in 2009, second one few days ago. With MP3s included.

"L.A. Burnout is made up of the sounds floating around Los Angeles in the late ’60s and ’70s; a faded aural imprint of the canyons, beaches, wildfires, neighborhoods, late-nights and early mornings of a bygone L.A. Play this mix around dusk while driving through Topanga with the windows rolled down — it’s the next best thing to time travel."

I don't know where do you live. Since Spotify is an European pleasure, I guess few Spotirama readers can really synch the playlist, turn off the pc and drive through Topanga, while listening to it on their portable player. But maybe it's even better. Because all these voices (Neil Young, Byrds, Love, Joni Mitchell, Mamas and Papas...) are not only good in timetravelling. They sound rather skilled in spacetravelling, too. Enjoy! :o)

Stereogum's 40 Best New Bands of 2010

Best Coast, Best Music

Let's go on, deep into the wild hunt for the best new music of 2010. Stereogum just published the list of its favourite 40 Best New Bands of the first eight months of the year. You can find the full list here, along with a brief description and one MP3 each band. I searched the spotisphere and I found songs by 21 of them. Not a great percentage, yep, but this time I think it's natural: most of the bands haven't published a real album, yet. Just singles or EPs. Stereogum chose an alphabetical order. I chose a more top-of-the-pops-oriented chart: a countdown based on the listenings of the Last.fm community. Best Coast gained #1.
Enjoy!

P.S. Curiosity. Just 11 out of these 40 bands appear in the similar NME's Best 50 New Bands of 2010, already spotified here. In that case, too, Best Coast was the happy winner.

Pitchfork Best New Music of 2010 (september update)

(we're ready to start listening to Arcade Fire on Spotify, please!)
(Ready To Start, live at Rock en Seine 2010, Paris)

Exactly three nights ago I was walking out the Rock en Seine area in the Paris southwestern suburbs, shocked and amazed by a wonderful show by the Arcade Fire. Unfortunately, it was interrupted by a heavy and windy rainstorm, but culminated with a wild, tribal, wet, unplugged version of Wake Up (take a look). The excitement, apres le deluge.

Now I'm back to my country, with some good memories and a damned cold to remind me of that night. I regained my possessions, including the pc and this blog. And I find myself thinking about Arcade Fire again. Their latest album The Suburbs has been included in Pitchfork selection of best new music of 2010, but I cannot find it on Spotify yet. It's the same destiny of Funeral and Neon Bible. Merge Records and canadian great guys, please, come on... you are technology-oriented, you even just made that lovely nostalgic streetviewesque video with Google, why not Spotify?

Anyway, ceci ce n'est pas un post about Arcade Fire, this is the update of the mixtape I started a couple of months, featuring Pitchfork Best New Music of 2010. Three songs each album, to get a taste of them. In bold, the albums I added today. Enjoy!

And if you have the chance and you haven't done it yet, go to an Arcade Fire concert! C'est la pure energie de la musique, la plus belle, la plus fort. Even without the annoying epic of rainstorms, I bet. :o)
(... and pardon my french, won't happen again).

50 Best New Bands of 2010 (NME)

Veronica Falls, graveyard lovers

Hi! A small break in a long holiday. Just to give you the possibility of discovering the 50 Best New Bands of 2010, according to the New Musical Express. Well, more honestly and more correctly, I should write "the 23 Best News Bands that I found on Spotify" (the full youtubized list is on NME's website). Is this the future of rock'n'roll? Who knows. Maybe yes, probably not. Sure, it's a light & fresh mixtape, good soundtrack for the last days of august. I will bring it with me in my upcoming end-of-holiday parisian week. Should I try listening to Found Love in a Graveyard at Père Lachaise? :o)
Enjoy it!
