Kranky Style - 2 playlists to celebrate 20 years of Kranky Records

When people talk about Chicago's history of fiercely independent record labels, they usually bring up Touch and Go, Drag City, and Thrill Jockey. It's too bad that Kranky Records, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2013, doesn't come to mind more often, because it certainly belongs in that company—it's proved just as reliable, creative, and uncompromising as any of those better-known imprints. I was not a fine connoisseur of Kranky Records music, but when I read articles such the one above, or this one, or this other one, I wanted to know (& listen to) something more about this label. So I entered in a world made with the kosmic kranky sounds of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Deerhunter, Atlas Sound, Tim Hecker, Low, Grouper, Labradford, Out Hud... And I liked it.  

Results: two playlists. The first one is a kind of unofficial and absolutely questionable best of, compiled basically on the preferences of Last.fm community, revised by some personal aesthetics. The second one is a new evidence of the incurable encyclopedical pathology affecting myself, made possible by Kranky official website: a complete archive of all Kranky albums I found on Spotify (it's a heavy one: 1385 tracks). 

So you have two roads diverging in the dark Kranky wonderwood, you can enjoy the most travelled one or shuffle into the infinite forest. Both, I slowly discovered, may give you great satisfactions.

From Mudhoney to Nirvana, from The Postal Service to The Shins, from Iron & Wine to Band of Horses, from Tad to Codeine, from About a Girl to Such Great Heights, from proto-grunge to post-folk. Wondering about the tracklist's criteria? No alphabetical order. No chronology. And I didn't choose the songs, either. You did it. ... reloaded. I already tried making a playlist out of Sub Pop's historical monthly subscription mail service... more than a year ago. It was a disaster: just 23 songs found, out of the 200/210 of the full series. Today, it's a little better. Most songs are still missing, but I found 52. 33 from the "first" Club (grunge era, 1988-93), 19 from the "second" Club (modern age, 1998-2002). I updated the old playlist (with songs from both the series) and I made two new different playlists, for people who prefer not mixing Fugazi with Bright Eyes.

Children of Morricone - A 69-song Frankenstein influenced by the Spaghetti Maestro

Some days ago, I read an article about the influence of composer Ennio Morricone on rock artists like Air, Portishead, Sebastien Tellier, Calexico, Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi. I like all of them. Morricone, too. So I googled a little (finding this page, this YouTube collection, and especially these extraordinary mega playlists), I checked my iPod and my mental database, and - mixing all these sources and exploring Spotify database - I started building a playlist. The result is below. I titled it Children of Morricone, but maybe a more accurate choice would have been Spaghetti Frankenstein: indeed, it includes original Morricone tunes, many covers, Bud Spencer & Terence Hill movie soundtracks, rock from the prehistoric age (Love, Cream) and from more modern times (Calexico, Pixies), heavyweights (Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Elvis, R.E.M.) and obscure italian youngsters (Calibro 35) or traditional ballroom orchestras (Castellina-Pasi accordion Italian theme for Lupin III tv animated series), trip hop, Alejandro Jodorowski, videogame themes, tango, hindi folk, french touch, krautrock and pan flutes. Some extatic Metallica and a couple of Mike Patton incarnations, too. Sometimes the link with Morricone's music (spaghetti western and beyond) is very tight. Sometimes it's more, well, imaginative. Wikileaks told me that today is the day John Lennon died. This is a little tribute: 69 different artists playing his songs. 

Comments:

There are hundreds of Lennon covers available on Spotify. Selecting 69 was a hard (and very subjective) task. Some come from a huge 2007 Amnesty benefit album for Darfur, some others are from more obscure and forgotten past records. Some sound close to the original, some get distant. Some are serious, some are funny. And, caution, MIA is not the Paper Planes girl, but a Berlin rock band.

P.S. since this is a covers playlist and I want it to feature Lennon's voice, too ... well, I also included a famous cover sung by him. :o)

The Greatest Indie Soundtrack in the World (69 Original Movie Soundtracks for Indie Lovers)

The Social Network and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World are responsible for this playlist. I watched them recently: I loved Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor soundtrack of the first, and liked the funny indie we-are-sex-bob-ombed atmosphere of the last. So I started googling the Web for a "indie-soundtrack-top-50", or something like that. Not finding anything I liked, I decided to create it for myself. 

Here it is. It's a collection of 69 movie soundtracks from the last thirteen years (1998-2010). Not all of them are indie. Let's say they're indie in the spirit. Unfortunately, I haven't found on Spotify all I was looking for. No Lost in Translation or Garden State, no Before Sunset or 24 Hour Party People, no Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, no Daft Punk's Interstella or Jonny Greenwood's Let There Be Blood. Anyway, I think the results are good. The problem is that now I'd like to watch many of these movies again. :o)
