The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time on Spotify (Rolling Stone, 2003 & 2012 versions)

From Wikipedia:

"The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" is a 2003 special issue of American magazine Rolling Stone, and a related book published in 2005. The lists presented were compiled based on votes from selected rock musicians, critics, and industry figures, and predominantly feature British and American music from the 1960s and 1970s. From 2007 onwards, the magazine published similarly titled lists in other countries around the world. In 2012, Rolling Stone published a revised edition of the list drawing on the original and a later survey of albums in the 2000s. It was made available in "bookazine" format on newsstands in the US from April 27 to July 25 (and you can browse it online, too).

In April 2010, I made a Spotify playlist of the original version of the chart. Now I updated it and I made a new one, based on 2012 revised edition of the list. I also made two slim versions (3 tracks each album), for listeners who want to get a shuffle-taste of the list, without listening to full albums. Below you find the four playlists and the full lists, with albums not available on Spotify striked through.

NME's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

The old and dusty U2 fan in me is screaming like a screamapillar. How could someone dare to pick just one U2 record in a Top 500 albums of all time chart? Relegating it at #424? And it's not even Achtung Baby! Well, that's not the only blasphemy of this NME Top 500, a very recent chart (october). So recent that it even already includes some 2013 albums, like Arctic Monkeys' AM and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories.

NME staff made some very different choices from the famous Rolling Stone's Top500 (spotified a long time ago, I should update it...) and from any usual strongly-sixties-oriented all time list: here we have far more British artists, more contemporary bands and some really bold moves, like putting Rolling Stones out of the Top 20 (and Arctic Monkeys, Strokes, Arcade Fire, Pulp, PJ Harvey and My Bloody Valentine in).

At the end, I kind of like it. You may not agree with NME choices (I don't agree with many of them...), but this list has the pleasant sound of a kill-the-old-idols manifesto. In a retromaniac world like the one we're living in, filled with oh-so-boring voices repeating that 60s and 70s were better and that we're all doomed, it's good to meet a different vision of the things. So, at least for one playlist (a 374-hour long one), fuck the screamapillar and welcome to a Britannia-ruled fantasy.

The Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Time to exaggerate. First Spotirama post was dedicated to the spotifization of  Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Now it's time to do the same with the 500 Greatest Albums, a chart published by Rolling Stone on the november 2003 issue and re-published online in a rather user-unfriendly shape after the recent restyling of magazine's website.
