Blue Note Records 75th Anniversary Vinyl Initiative (100 jazz albums)

Blue Note Records is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a remastered vinyl reissue of 100 classic albums, including masterpieces by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Thelonious Monk, Bobby McFerrin and many more. This is the message by president Don Was, announcing the initiative on the label's website:

Two years ago, we decided to begin remastering the jewels of the Blue Note catalog in hi-def resolutions of 96k and 192k. In order to develop a guiding artistic philosophy for this delicate endeavor, we donned our lab coats, ran dozens of sonic experiments and carefully referenced every generation of our reissues. Ultimately, we decided that our goal would be to protect the original intentions of the artists, producers and engineers who made these records and that, in the case of pre-digital-era albums, these intentions were best represented by the sound and feel of their first-edition vinyl releases. Working with a team of dedicated and groovy engineers, we found a sound that both captured the feel of the original records while maintaining the depth and transparency of the master tapes... the new remasters are really cool! 

While these new versions will become available in Digital Hi Def, CD and the Mastered for iTunes formats, the allure of vinyl records is WAY too potent to ignore. This year, Blue Note - along with our friends at Universal Music Enterprises - is launching a major 75th Anniversary Vinyl Initiative that is dedicated to the proposition that our catalog should be readily available at a low cost - featuring high quality pressings and authentic reproductions of Blue Note's iconic packaging. Beginning in March 2014, we'll start rolling out five remastered vinyl reissues every month. Although this program begins in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary, our catalog runs so deep that we will faithfully be reissuing five albums a month for many years to come!

Jazz Magazine/Jazzman Les Chocs 2013 and Les Inrocks World Jazz Chanson 2013

Merry Christmas in jazz. Jazz Magazine/Jazzman is a French monthly publication, result of 2009 merger between the two magazines. "Les Chocs 2013" is not an actual chart, but a selection of the jazz albums that has been a "choc" for the mag critics in 2013: one choc each journalist. It's a rather varied selection and - even if just half albums are available on Spotify - I think it may be a soundtrack fit for a happy and quiet festivity. As a bonus, always coming from France, more world-spiced, the selection of Les Inrockuptibles best world/jazz/chanson albums of 2013 (if you're interested in jazz, you can also check the Jazzwise Top 20 New Releases of 2013).

From ACT's Point of View (a tribute to 20-year-old ACT Music label)

Stop your clocks. Turn off your electric guitars. Forget your daily life noise. Press the play button. Open a book and start reading it slowly. Or just take a seat and look out of the window. The nighter, the better. Cognac allowed. This playlist is jazzy. Contemporarily jazzy. Filled with slow piano ballads and silken female voices. It starts with the late Esbjorn Svensson, it goes through a Norah Jones cammeo, some flamenco, a Vietnamese-reinvented Eleanor Rigby and it ends with a nice rendition of The Simpsons' theme. It features a lot of musicians with exotic, non-anglosaxon birth names: Bugge, Nils, Leszek, Rigmor, Paolo, Youn, Solveig, Iiro, Nguyen, Viyaj, Ulf, Viktoria...  It's a 20-song happy-20th-birthday to ACT jazz label. I got the idea while reading this article on The Guardian. ACT is based in Germany, it was founded by Siegfried Loch in 1992 and almost incredibly it hasn't an English Wikipedia page, yet. If you sprechen Deutsch, there's the German one. Consider it as a quiet parenthesis in the barbaric yawp of chaos. Enjoy it. Then, start yawping again.

Have you seen the Guardian's A History of Modern Music feature?

It's a gigantic series of articles, interactive timelines and playlists, published this week. They divided it in seven chapters, one for genre (pop, rock, hip hop & r'n'b, indie, dance, world & folk, jazz) and the first thing I thought when I saw it was: great! I will make some Spotify playlists that you can listen while reading the articles!

The second thing I thought, it was: oh, God, they already did it. Yes, each genre has an official playlist, on the Guardian Spotify account.

Then, it came the third thought: this is in pure Spotirama spirit! (yes, I have a Spotiramacentric vision of the world). I must link the playlists!

Last saturday I went to a concert with a friend of mine. While driving to the venue, we spoke a bit about music. I made her listen to one of my last iPod playlists. She gave me a cd by Herbie Hancock. Thinking about it, later, I realized the easy availability of rock music (my favourite) is taking me away from all the other genres. No jazz anymore. No world music. Just few pop or electronics. Nada heavy metal, nada black music, nada classical. It's like an ocean of indie got a complete control of my music life. That's not good. So, as a first reaction, I spent some day listening to something different, starting from Herbie Hancock and jazz. Easy came the idea to make a jazz playlist on Spotirama, too. Then, I met Rudy Van Gelder.

Rudy Van Gelder (born 2 November 1924, Jersey City, New Jersey) is an American recording engineer specializing in jazz. Often regarded as one of the most important recording engineers in music history, Van Gelder has recorded several thousand jazz sessions, including many widely recognized as classics, in a career spanning more than half a century. Bringing an unprecedented clarity to jazz recording, Van Gelder has recorded many of the great names in the genre, including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Grant Green, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, and many others. He worked with many record companies, but he is most closely associated with Blue Note Records, now a division of EMI. (...) Since 1999, he has been busy remastering the analog Blue Note recordings he made several decades ago into 24-bit digital recordings in its ongoing RVG Edition series.

The full list of these remastered recordings is here and the good news is that all the 168 titles are available on Spotify. Unfortunately, they're not always appropriately tagged. Sometimes they appear as "Rudy Van Gelder Edition", sometimes as "RVG", sometimes the engineer's name appears only in some songs, sometimes it doesn't appear at all. I collected all the 168 albums (in italics, the ones I'm not 100% sure they're RVG remastered editions). Then, as a bonus, I collected also the other albums that appear as Rudy Van Gelder remasters on Spotify (both from Blue Note and Concord Records) but are not on the official Blue Note website. Total: 234 albums! I put them in two different playlists. The first one is made with the complete recordings. Take it as a kind of huge encyclopedia of classic jazz. The second one includes just one song each album: it's a sort of radio station, good to get a taste without diggin' too deep in live versions, alternate takes, etc. etc. The order of the first 168 albums follows the publication of the remastered recordings from 1999 to 2009.
