Indiewire 15 Best Soundtracks of 2013

Last saturday, I playlisted Indiewire chart of best film scores of the year. Now it's time to do the same with 15 Best Soundtracks list. These are mostly great collections of previously released pop, rock & jazz songs: you get music by Elton John and Nick Drake, Kevin Ayers and Gloria Jones, M.I.A. and Kanye West, Foxygen and MGMT, Blur and Primal Scream... plus some newly composed tracks (like those in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire). Not all official albums are available on Spotify, but all soundtracks are included in the playlists (at least, partially). See below for more explanations.

Enjoy.

Complete series of Spotirama end-of-2013 playlists (with charts by Amazon, BuzzFeed, Indiewire, Jazzwise, Les Inrockuptibles, Mojo, NPR, Paste, PopMatters, Pretty Much Amazing, Q, Renowned for Sound, Revolver, Rolling Stone, Rough Trade, Stereogum, Uncut, The Wire, Zane Lowe)

NME Top 15 EPs in 2013

A great cover for a great record, #1 2013 EP for NME

Spotirama is against all kind of discrimination: gender, race, skin colour, eating habits, supported sport teams (... but Juventus is evil) and/or recording format. So, here it is a playlist based on NME picture chart of Top 15 EPs in 2013. No age discrimination, either: inside you'll find Parquet Courts, Pixies, Vaccines, Flaming Lips...

Enjoy.

Indiewire 15 Best Film Scores of 2013

While waiting for the few missing big shots in rocklandia (end-of-year lists from Pitchfork, The Guardian...), let's take a look at a different music horizon: movie soundtracks. Indiewire picked its 15 best film scores of 2013. It's a very good selection, filled with atmospheric landscapes, based on original music composed by artists like M83, Hans Zimmer, Jon Hopkins, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Explosions in the Sky... Unfortunately, just 66% of albums are available on Spotify, but I'm going to keep an eye on it, periodically adding the missing works (by Arcade Fire, Tindersticks, Skrillex...) when/if they'll be added on the service.

Enjoy.

P.S. Complete series of Spotirama end-of-2013 playlists (with charts by Amazon, Jazzwise, Mojo, Paste, PopMatters, Pretty Much Amazing, Q, Renowned for Sound, Revolver, Rolling Stone, Rough Trade, Stereogum, Uncut, Zane Lowe) is here.

Full list

Strikethrough albums are not available on Spotify. All albums are original scores (not soundtrack collections of previously released songs). One exception: 12 Years a Slave. I put it in the playlists because it includes (along with songs by John Legend, Laura Mvula, Chris Cornell...) the Hans Zimmer's theme praised by Indiewire. I'm still not sure it's the right choice. I will think about it.

1. Alexander Ebert - All Is Lost
2. Explosions in the Sky & David Wingo - Prince Avalanche
3. Shane Carruth - Upstream Color
4. Daniel Hart - Ain't Them Bodies Saints
5. Jóhann Jóhannsson - Prisoners
6. Hans Zimmer - Man of Steel
7. Arcade Fire & Owen Pallett - Her
8. Cliff Martinez & Skrillex - Spring Breakers
9. Steven Price - Gravity
10. Clint Mansell - Stoker
11. Tindersticks - Bastards
12. Jon Hopkins - How I Live Now
13. Hans Zimmer - 12 Years a Slave
14. David Wingo - Mud
15. M83 - Oblivion
