100 Best Canadian Songs Ever (CBC Radio, 2014)

Compiled by CBC Radio, this is one of those charts that include everything. No, really: everything. Here you'll find Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, The Band and Leonard Cohen, Arcade Fire and The New Pornographers, Feist and Metric, k.d. lang and Sarah McLachlan, Paul Anka and Celine Dion, Bruce Cockburn and Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, Japandroids and Death From Above 1979, Carly Rae Jepsen and Nelly Furtado, Steppenwolf and The Guess Who, Drake and Grimes, Ron Sexsmith and Rufus Wainwright, Stars and Broken Social Scene, Avril Lavigne and Nickelback. And many more. Even some artists that you forgot (well, I forgot) to be Canadians. Maybe the critic inside you could rate it not a 100% quality collection, but I think it's a really nice & light one. Listen to it in this Spotify playlist and/or go to CBC for some stats and a messy & mutant 4-minute YouTube mash up of the Top 100.

Enjoy!

The Polaris Music Prize Spotify Encyclopedia

('Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! cover!)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! won the Polaris Music Prize 2013, "an annual award given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales or record label". Their statement of appreciation was not so appreciating. Anyway, in this month-long wait for the new album of another well-known (but not very spotify-friendly) Canadian band, I decided to update some previous playlists I made about the Polaris Prize. And I added two new ones!

So:
playlist #1(the new one): all winning albums from 2006 to 2013.
playlist #2 (the other new one): all shortlisted 2013 albums, just to catch the Canadian sound of the year
playlist #3 (updated): mammoth with all shortlisted albums from 2006 to 2013
playlist #4 (updated): mammoth lite, with three songs each shortlisted album from 2006 to 2013

Enjoy!

Polaris Music Prize 2006-2011

My personal Photoshop disaster

Arcade Fire's music is on Spotify, the full catalogue! Let's celebrate with the update of Polaris Music Prize playlists. As Wikipedia says, "the Polaris Music Prize is a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006 and includes a C$20,000 cash prize". Last year I made two playlists, based on all the shortlisted albums for this award. Now, I added the 2011 shortlisted albums, including the winning one, that by chance is Arcade Fire's The Suburbs. Enjoy!

P.S. I don't wanna think of how many other 2010 playlists should I update...

Polaris Music Prize 2006-2010 - Plenty of good young Canadian music

Karkwa: "we just won Polaris 2010 but we're not on Spotify, (canadian) d'oh!"

ACHTUNG! THESE PLAYLISTS HAVE BEEN UPDATED IN 2011. NEW VERSIONS HERE.

I just saw a movie called Frozen. Two boys and a girl stranded on a chairlift, halfway up the mountain, with none caring about them but some wolves, well... hungry like wolves. Chilling. So I decided that tonight playlist is coming from a cold country, full of wolves (I guess), chairlifts (I guess, again: they just hosted Winter Olympics!) and great rock band (I'm definitely sure). A North-American one. Not US. Yep, you got it. The other one.

From Wikipedia:
"The Polaris Music Prize is a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006 and includes a C$20,000 cash prize".

Deaf to the evil call of money, as usual, this Spotirama couple of playlists will involve not only the lucky winners but all the shortlisted albums in the first five years of Polaris Music Prize. First one is the mammoth, with full albums. Second one is the lite, with just three songs each album. Recently, canadian people recorded a lot of great music. Here you have a fine selection. Enjoy!
