Blitz - 25 Best Portuguese Albums (2009)

Info: In 2009 Portuguese magazine Blitz celebrated its 25th anniversary with a big survey about national music. It asked to artists, journalists, critics, radio djs and people from the music industry to vote for the best Portuguese albums of the latest five decades. The result was a list of 25 albums - five per decade - published on the November issue of the magazine.

Targhe Tenco 2015 Nominations (Italian Awards)

Info: The Targa Tenco is an Italian music award assigned every year since 1984 by the Club Tenco (named after the singer/songwriter Luigi Tenco). Winners are elected by a large panel of over 200 Italian music journalists, in five different categories: Best Italian Album of the Year, Best Album Mainly in Dialect, Best Debut Album, Best Cover Album and Best Song. Club Tenco just released the nomination lists of the 2015 edition, that I spotified in the following playlists.

Radio1 - The 100 Greatest Belgian Songs of All Time (2006-2014)

Info: 100 op 1 - De Beste Belgen is a radio show broadcast by Belgian Radio 1 that every year asks its listeners to vote their favorite all-time songs by Belgian artists. I discovered it in 2010, when I spotified the results of the most recent survey. Now, instead of refreshing that playlist, I did something different: I looked for all the 100 op 1 yearly charts available online and I made a spreadsheet, assigning 100 points to the #1, 99 points to the #2, etc. etc. The result is a kind of an aggregated Top 100, collected in this Spotify playlist, that includes some artists internationally known (Brel, dEUS, Hooverphonic...) and many others that I guess are more local favorites. As of August 2015, the chart is based on the 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014 charts. The show started in 2002 and if anyone knows where to find the other Top100s, I will be very happy to add the data and to update the playlist.

100 Best Scottish Albums (The Scotsman)

Today Scotland decides. And today Spotirama has decided to listen to Scotland. This 100 Best Scottish Albums has been compiled by The Scotsman in 2012 and updated in 2013. I don't agree with everything - no Franz Ferdinand at all? - but I'm happy I found some old friends I haven't heard for a while (The Beta Band, The Delgados) and some even older ones I just met for the first time (The Incredible String Band, Orange Juice). Easy to say, this is a soundtrack to 2014 Fifa World Cup. I'm not a great expert of brazilian music and I decided to trust this (brazilian) website called Top Songs. In the playlist you'll find many big names (Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chicho Buarque, Jorge Ben Jor, Roberto Carlos - not the former football player! - Joao Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Gilberto Gil...) and several songs whose titles probably don't tell you anything, while you perfectly know their melodies. That's what happened to me.

Two playlists and some new horizons, today: finnish indie rock of the new millennium! I steal (again) from Acclaimed Music: "Nuorgam ("Pitchfork of Finland"), a music website that lived for two years, published, among other things, their lists of best songs of 2000s. They are based on critic polls. They have separate lists for Finnish and foreign songs. Both lists technically extend from 2000 to 2012, but the Finnish list did not include any songs from 2012. One song per artist". You can check on the original website the full Finnish chart and the foreign songs chart. Quite interestingly, all foreign songs are available on Spotify.

United Capitals of Europe (a unionist playlist, from Amsterdam to Warszawa)

These are hard times for the European dream, whatever it is. As usual, money is haunting people's lives and minds. Everybody speaks about debt, banks, finance. A lot of people is getting poor, a lot is getting angry, a lot is looking at the EU as a noxious burden. Northern people think mediterranean people are just fucking moneywasters. Mediterranean people think northern people are just trying to strangle them. All of their strategies sound quite selfish: each country thinks about itself. Let's say the sense of community is not very strong. And the happiness, of course, it flies away.

Now, this little playlist will not be capable to take it back. And it won't certainly solve euro problems with a kind of musical magic. It's just a little game, digging the Spotify catalogue for some hidden gold. You want a slogan? Uhm... let me think... capitals are better than capital?

A bit of legenda & additional infos:

- The 27 cities are the capital cities of the 27 member states of the European Union;

- If possible, I favourited songs titled with the city-name only;

- If possible (2), I favourited the original local city-name (i.e. Lisboa > Lisbon)

- If possible (3), I favourited songs by local artists (Roma by an Italian singer, Paris by a French chanteuse, Bucharest by a Romanian hip hop band...);

- If possible (4), I favourited European artists;

- When I did like a song, it happened I broke one or any of the previous "if possible" rules;

- Even if my DNA is dominated by rock, I tried to keep the playlist as varied as I could (indie, pop, hip hop, music from now, something from yesterday);

- A big goodbye to Spanish actress and singer Sara Montiel, who died just few days ago in Madrid;
