Maybe the album format is not dead, yet. But it looks Spotirama readers/listeners do prefer individual songs playlists (and love Pitchfork). Happy New Year's Eve!

Acclaimed Music Best 50 Albums and Best 50 Songs of 2013 (based on dozens of critics' charts worldwide)

(image: The Hood Internet)

Acclaimed Music community is one of the most reliable, continuous and powerful sources of Spotirama. AM users collect an incredible amount of critics' lists, that they use to compile a wonderful series of charts (Top 3000 all-time songs and albums, year-by-year, decade-by-decade... also available as Spotify playlists). In december, they also start collecting dozens of end-of-year charts. These make the basis of two spreadsheetsone for songs, one for albums. Mathematically combining all the individual lists (XX points to #1 album, YY points to #2 album, so on...), spreadsheets give you two final 2013 charts. I think they work as perfect end-of-2013 critics-friendly summaries. Right now, spreadsheets are not closed: they will be in the next days and maybe AM will make complete Spotify playlists out of them. So, take the following playlists - last of Spotirama end-of-year series - as a partial and essential collection of most-acclaimed songs and albums of 2013 (good thing: all 50 songs are available on Spotify).

Enjoy.

Rockit Top 100 Italian Songs of 2013

(Speaking about music) what happened in my country in 2013? Rockit just published in listenable form its chart of the Top 100 Italian songs of the year. Founded in 1997, Rockit is likely the oldest and most important website about Italian indie, underground, hip hop, electronica & alternative rock scene. It means this list is mainly based on songs and artists who did not top the local radio and iTunes pop charts, with few exceptions (I Cani, Baustelle, Massimo Volume, Neffa, Max Gazzè, Gue Pequeno...). Actually I don't think 2013 has been an unforgettable year for Italian music - I just have Baustelle and Massimo Volume's albums in my personal Top20 - but listening to this playlist I'm getting some late pleasant surprises. Maybe it will be the same for you.

Enjoy.

Call Me Giorgio - Moroder Dj Setlist 2013

Daft by Punk (from Reversed Music Icons Fandom Project)
Ok, this is not just another end-of-year list. Let's say it's a possible retromaniac soundtrack for your new year's eve party. Since 2013 has been the year of the living disco (Daft Punk, Arcade Fire, Pet Shop Boys, Janelle Monae...), I thought "who better than the venerable disco kingpin Giorgio Moroder could spin the last black circles of the year?". So I made a playlist out of the actual setlist of his recent DJ set at Electronic Beats Festival in Vienna (november 23rd). You can listen to the real DJ set on Soundcloud. Or you can shuffle almost all of it, in pure Spotify splendour, in the playlist below. Inside, you'll find an incredible amount of hot stuff from the Seventies and the Eighties, mostly produced by Moroder: Donna Summer, Blondie & Irene Cara, Never Ending Story, Scarface & Top Gun's theme. That kind of sound and vision. Plus, inevitably, the recent and cool Daft Punk's Giorgio By Moroder.

Enjoy.

2013 of the Others: Top 20 Portuguese Albums (Blitz), Top 40 Spanish Albums (Playground), Top 20 Swedish Albums (Nöyesguiden)

Let's take a quick detour in the non-english European world. Here we have three national charts of 2013: Top 20 Portuguese albums of the year (by Blitz), Top 40 Spanish albums (by Playground) and Top 20 Swedish albums (by Nöyesguiden). Actually some of them are in English, but most are not. There are a lot of interesting surprises and the acknowledgement of Spotify relevance in Sweden (100% Swedish albums are available on the service).

Enjoy.

Gilles Peterson All Winners 2013

Actually, this is not a proper end-of-year chart. It's a spotifization of two special radio programs of BBC6 DJ Gilles Peterson, aired in May and November and dedicated to "the best of 2013 so far". I made something similar in 2010, that playlist was well-followed, so I decided to repeat it. Gilles Peterson is a widely know tastemaker, in terms of jazz, electronica, world, r&b and here you do find an amazing soundtrack of the year that goes away.

Enjoy.

Jazz Magazine/Jazzman Les Chocs 2013 and Les Inrocks World Jazz Chanson 2013

Merry Christmas in jazz. Jazz Magazine/Jazzman is a French monthly publication, result of 2009 merger between the two magazines. "Les Chocs 2013" is not an actual chart, but a selection of the jazz albums that has been a "choc" for the mag critics in 2013: one choc each journalist. It's a rather varied selection and - even if just half albums are available on Spotify - I think it may be a soundtrack fit for a happy and quiet festivity. As a bonus, always coming from France, more world-spiced, the selection of Les Inrockuptibles best world/jazz/chanson albums of 2013 (if you're interested in jazz, you can also check the Jazzwise Top 20 New Releases of 2013).

Enjoy and Merry Christmas.

Rolling Stone 100 Best Songs of 2013

Rolling Stone 100 Best Songs of 2013 is a 7-hour long playlist collecting almost each pop, rock and hip hop big hit you hear in the last 12 months: from Daft Punk's Get Lucky to Lorde's Royals, from Justin Timberlake's Mirrors to Arcade Fire's Reflektor, from Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball to Katy Perry's Roar, from HAIM's The Wire to Avicii's Wake Me Up, from Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines to Disclosure's White Noise, from Pearl Jam's Sirens to Bruce Springsteen's High Hopes, likely this is the most mainstream end-of-year chart of the whole Spotirama series. Rolling Stone made its own Spotify playlist out of it, I edited a couple of songs I consider not correct and added a cover of Beck's Don't Act Like Your Heart Isn't Hard (from sheet album Songbook).

Enjoy and have a Merry & Musical Christmas!

XLR8R 30 Best Releases of 2013

In the wonderful accelerating electronic dreamscape of XLR8R, Jon Hopkins' Immunity is the king of 2013. #2 goes to Special Request, #3 to Oneohtrix Point Never and Top 10 completes with Floorplan, DJ Koze, FaltyDL, Tim Hecker, Factory Floor, Boards of Canada and Graze. Why "release" and not "albums"? That's the official explanation: "for the sake of clarity, we should explain that anything with two or more original songs was considered a release. Although most of our choices are albums, a handful of EPs made the cut. We also decided to include mix CDs in this category". Go to XLR8R to get more info about each release (chart is in two parts), and/or listen to it in the playlists below (and there is the XLR8R Best 50 Tracks playlist, too!).

Enjoy.

Spin 50 Best Songs and 50 Best Albums of 2013

Former-printed now-online magazine Spin gives us a shiny moment in mainstream, with its charts of the top albums and top songs of the year. In the songs list, especially, we find some tunes that conquered the 2013 airplay everywhere in the world, but have been proudly snubbed in other charts, like Blurred Lines, Wrecking Ball, You. There's even a little #42 room for Scandinavian viral sensation Ylvis' The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?). List of albums is slightly more predictable, with the almighty Kanye at #1, well-performing Vampire Weekend at #3 and surprising Chance the Rapper at #2. Arcade Fire reflekts anonymously at #32. And poor little Arctic Monkeys are out of the list: I'm starting to think Americans didn't really fell in love with AM.

Enjoy.

The Quietus 100 Albums of 2013

Something extralong, something different. British online magazine The Quietus made its list of 100 best albums of 2013. It just takes first mesmerizing notes of #1 Grumbling Fur's Glynnaestra (listen to The Ballad of Roy Batty by night and you'll see things that you people wouldn't believe) to make you realize this is not the usual end-of-year chart. Album titles are another good exotic evidence of the new world opening in front of your Spotify account: Dansktoppen Møder Burkina Faso I Det Himmelblå Rum Hvor Solen Bor, Suite at #8, Cień Chmury Nad Ukrytym Polem at #12, Yeezus at #13 (kidding! this one is not so rare and exotic), Valonielu at #53, Racial Golf Course No Bitches at #77, Wölfbait at #83, the unfortunately not available Sucks Cocks In Hell at #100. There's even a tiny bit of beloved little Italy in the Top 20 (Teho Teardo album Still Smiling, recorded with Blixa Bargeld). Go to The Quietus for full infos about each album. And/or listen to them in the playlists below.

Enjoy.

The Guardian Best Albums of 2013

Recently outdone by Drake (songs) and Vampire Weekend (albums) in Pitchfork charts, Kanye gets a energizing end of the week, thanks to British The Guardian, that just picked Yeezus as best album of 2013. Runners up are John Grant's Pale Green Ghosts (more appreciated in Europe than in the US) and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories. If Pitchfork snubbed European darlings Arctic Monkeys, The Guardian's retaliation is heavy: no room for Arcade Fire in the Top 40.

Enjoy.
