Q Best 50 Albums of 2011

In praise of diversity. Earlier this day I published the Spotify version of Paste Top 50 Albums of 2011. Now it's time to reply with the list compiled by British magazine Q. And, at first count, it seems only eleven albums are in both lists (those by James Blake, Feist, tUnE-yArDs, Radiohead, Gillian Welch, Lykke Li, Real Estate, Kurt Vile, St. Vincent, Bon Iver and Adele). While Paste crowned Bon Iver, Q gives its preference to Florence + The Machine. And it's a little more mainstream, with Lady Gaga and Coldplay (at #5? Cover oblige?). Enjoy!

Abbey Road 80 (a Spotify tribute to the 80th anniversary of the legendary studios)

Just while EMI is getting split and sold to Universal and Sony, there's a special birthday to celebrate: today, 12th november, 80 years ago, Abbey Road studios were opened by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Edward Elgar (above). So I decided to make a pair of tribute playlists to these legendary studios. Unfortunately, without The Beatles and Pink Floyd. But with all the other big artists who recorded there.

First playlist is a 80-songs-for-80-years one. A big one. Chronologically it goes from the first Vaughan Williams' symphony recorded by Sir John Barbirolli in 1943 to the last tune by Florence + the Machine, featuring music by Cliff Richard and The Shadows (they recorded everything there: I had to select just twelve songs by them), The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Zombies, The Allan Parsons Project, Buzzcocks, XTC, Kate Bush, Duran Duran, Rush, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Oasis, Elliott Smith, Kanye West, U2, Travis, Il Volo, Sting, The Drums, Lady Gaga, etc. etc. and yes, The Darkness too. I tried to shape it as a kind of comprehensive History of Abbey Road Studios (at least the pop side of it, no movie soundtracks are included). The second playlist is a 80-minutes-for-80-years one. A quick one: just twenty songs, by personal tastes. Enjoy!

P.S. Selections are based on a list of recordings I found on Wikipedia. Any suggestions/corrections are welcomed.

Dead Air Spotify vol.3 - Radiohead Office Charts

While making yesterday's playlist, I discovered that Radiohead's The King of Limbs and The King of Limbs Remixed (AKA TKOL RMX 1234567) have been uploaded on Spotify. What a nice surprise! Now there's only one Radiohead album missing: In Rainbows. This made me realize that it's a long time that I don't update the Spotify versions of Office Charts, the playlists the band periodically post on its Dead Air Space blog. So, here it comes again. Dead Air Spotify vol.3 features all Radiohead Office Charts published (mainly by Thom Yorke) since may 2011 to today. It's a huge one, with ninety-one tracks and more than seven hours of extremely bizarre and non-rock music, coming from Glastonbury dj sets, RIP tributes (to Gil Scott-Heron) or global climate fears. Music for contemporary airports on a rainy day. Enjoy!

(and if you're really hungry and you need to suck more young blood, at the end of the post you find the Dead Air Mammoth, with all Dead Air Spotify playlists in one...)

The Fly's The Top 50 Albums of 2011

I know what you're thinking: it's november 9th, is it not a little too early for an end-of-the-year list? Yeah, I think it is. But last year was (almost) the same: the first list I found and spotified, by Rough Trade, was out november 16th. That's life. November is gray. People need to rush and magazines want to be the first. So let's start the big end-of-the-year madness with the top 50 albums of 2011 according to the writers of UK magazine The Fly. You can read a digital version of the full magazine (chart included) here, while you can vote your favourite album (and maybe win some cds) here. About the chart, I think it's a good start and it made me realize how many albums I missed this year. e.g. The Antlers. The greatest thing, though, something that really gave me a positive look towards the future lists, is the percentage of albums available on Spotify. 98%. Just one missing: that strangely named creature by Coldplay. Enjoy!

Acclaimed Music Top 20 Songs of 1966

When you search "Good Vibrations" on Google,
it can happen you to find this nice thing

A playlist with Good Vibrations, God Only Knows, Paint It Black and Hey Joe cannot be wrong. Especially if it features some great soul goodies, too, by Ike & Tina Tuner, Four Tops, Percy Sledge, Otis Redding, James Brown, The Supremes... along with a couple of those gigantic tunes that we all have in our deepest memory, even if we don't remember who wrote them (Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, Lovin' Spoonful's Summer in the City). Just four songs missing from Spotify: surprisingly, by The Beatles. Enjoy!

(This is a kind of "history of music" project, based on aggregated charts found on Acclaimed Music. It features Top 20 playlists for decades 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and yearly Top 20 playlists (both songs and albums) for each year from 1960 to 2010. In a perfect world, it should be a weekly project...)

MusicRadar's The 25 Best Basslines of All Time

This chart is null: as clearly shown in the video above, Chris Wolstenholme is actually Muse guitar & synth player

Friday, 28th October, MusicRadar wrote: "This week has been all about bass on MusicRadar. In celebration, we asked you to nominate your favourite basslines of all time in an effort to crown the greatest bass performance in history. With approximately 10,000 of you voting in our poll, we can now present the top 25 rundown in full. The rules were simple - as long as the part in question was played by human hands on an electric or acoustic bass guitar or an upright bass then it counted. Electronic or synthesized basslines weren't eligible; we'll be looking at those at a later date
