Primavera Sound 2010 on Spotify

Primavera Sound is a great rock festival, starting tomorrow in Barcelona (Spain) and lasting three days. I'm very excited because in few hours, after a really quick sleep, I will take a plane and go there, along with a bunch of rockophiles friends. Mission Catalunya! :o)

This year Primavera celebrates its 10th anniversary, with a new beer partner (from Estrella Damm to San Miguel) and a line up including Pavement, Pixies, Pet Shop Boys, Wilco, The XX, Florence + the Machine, Broken Social Scene, The New Pornographers and many many many more. It will also features an incredible event, more rare and precious than a solar eclipse: concerts by A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Real Estate and... Sunny Day Real Estate. Please, give us some sunny days in Barcelona, too.

To exercise myself before the event, I compiled a Primavera-themed playlist, with one song by each band playing at the festival that I found on Spotify. For me, it has been a good appetizer. For you, if you're not going there, it can be a good way to taste some of its musical flavour (with obscure Spanish indie-bands included). Enjoy!

Philly's Making Time club nights 10th anniversary playlist

This playlist has a sweet and pretty responsible: Nina Persson. I read the news (today oh boy) about the anniversary of Making Time, a kind of clubnights-parties-liverock-djthing taking place on Philadelphia for exactly 10 years. I wanted to know something more about it, I googled a little, and I landed on the website of RVNG Intl., the people behind Making Time nights. There I found a section named with the magical word: playlists. I was not sure of what doing with it... I wanted to taste some of the Making Time sound, maybe even making a mixtape of it, but the playlists looked crazily caleidoscopic and not always straightly linked to the MT thing. So I just started to check some of that music on Spotify and... ka-boom!... the blues took me. But it was a good blues. Actually, The Blues: a collaboration between an act called The Primary 1 and Cardigans' Nina Persson. Suddenly I fell in love with it. I facebooked the song to my friends and I decided that if someone at RVNG had the divine inspiration to make me know that, well, they would have surely deserved something from me, too. And the mixtape was born. So, here it comes the monster: a huge collection of songs taken from those playlists. I don't know if this is the real sound of Making Time party nights in Philly. Let's assume it is, at least partially. Take it as a Spotirama filtered (& Nina Persson inducted) sound of Making Time. It's a really crazy mix, with industrial boings boings, John Cale, indiepop little darlings, Phoenix, avantgardesque pieces, Grace Jones, incredibly obscure (to me) tropical & dance stuff, tons of remixes and even some absurd Italian pop tunes. Not all the RVNG songs are available on Spotify... but if you like the mix, go check their website for all the MP3s to download.
Enjoy! And if you like some of this music, say thanks to lady Persson... :o)

Billboard Alternative Songs #1 since 1988 to 2010

Siouxsie: dark lady, first #1

Alternative Songs is a Billboard chart created in 1988, based solely on the airplay of Modern Rock U.S. radios. Here it's a playlist that features all the #1 - since 1988 to modern days - available on Spotify (I found the list on Wikipedia). From R.E.M., XTC and Replacements to the grunge heroes, from nu-metal to White Stripes, Muse and the extreme fragmentation of the contemporary era... a 241-songs voyage in that strange land where mainstream and alternative collide. A little big history of last 20-years modern (american-oriented) rock and a good soundtrack for your next summer car rides... Pity that Red Hot Chili Peppers (11 songs) are not available...

P.S. I think I will keep it as an active playlist. That means I will update it periodically with new #1s.

The Manchester Issue (three Spotify playlists of finest mancunian music)

Manchester: Looking for the Light through the Pouring Rain is a book with all the most famous pictures of Manchester artists by Kevin Cummins

Last weekend, I got the chance to talk with Kevin Cummins, the legendary Manchester photographer who defined the image of so many mancunian rock artists, from Joy Division to New Order, from Happy Mondays to Stone Roses, from Morrissey to Oasis. We talked about football (he is a City supporter), about digital pictures, about Control and 24 Hour Party People (Kevin didn't like any of them), about the famous 1976 Sex Pistols concert who started the Manchester rock scene. Coming back from our meeting, I did need to listen to some music from Manchester. So I build these three playlists...

Playlist #1
PRIDE OF MANCHESTER (Mammoth version)
(431 tracks, about 1 day)

The first thing I did has been to look for some good charts/history about mancunian music. I found an interesting website, called Pride of Manchester, with a long history of the local music scene: decade by decade, starting in the 1930s. So I created a mammoth playlist with songs taken from these pages. The best part is the one about 1950s and 1960s, really detailed, full of references to UK charts, anecdotes, LPs, etc. The bad starts with the recent decades: some exclusions look very bizzarre (Oasis, for example) and last years are poorly covered. Besides, the history involve some acts that are only "partially" mancunian, like the american Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (Graham Nash is a former-Hollies emigré) and  Monkees (one member, Davy Jones, is from Manchester)...

Including music by:
George Formby Jr., Grace Fields, The Houghton Weavers, Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Hollies, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Herman's Hermits, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Bee Gees, The Monkees, Georgie Fame, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Barclay James Harvest, Hotlegs, McGuinness Flint, Peter Noone, 10cc, The Chosen Few, Thin Lizzy, Buzzcocks, Elkie Brooks, John Cooper Clarke, Frankie Valli, Sad Cafè, Phil Lynott, Joy Division, Godley & Creme, New Order, ABC, Kajagoogoo, The Smiths, Limahl, The Colourfield, Sandie Shaw, Mike & the Mechanics, The Stone Roses, Swing Out Sister, The Fall, The Railway Children, Happy Mondays, Morrissey, Inspiral Carpets, Electronic, England New Order, Northside, The Charlatans, MC Tunes, 808 State, The Mock Turtles, The Other Two, Saint Etienne, Black Grape, Monaco, Doves, Primal Scream, James, Ian Brown, Tim Burgess, Tim Booth, Gorillaz.

Listen to it on Spotify: HTTP Link, URI. (SR0158)

Playlist #2
PRIDE OF MANCHESTER (The 69)
(69 tracks, about 4 hours)

I was not completely satisfied with the previous playlist and I wanted something a little thinner and "selected":  thirty-six Bee Gees songs or twelve ABC's in one playlist, for me, are too much. So I kind of remixed and 69ed it: asking some help to Last.fm, I made a countdown chart of the Top 69 songs from the mammoth playlist. With a simple rule: no more than three songs each artist. And some exclusions dictated by personal taste. The result is below and I can say I like it. If you wanna spend an afternoon with Manchester sound, I think it's a honest, varied and relatively complete selection.

69. The Charlatans – Blackened Blue Eyes
68. Elkie Brooks – Pearl's A Singer
67. The Colourfield – Thinking Of You
66. Monaco – Shine (Someone Who Needs Me)
65. The Fall – Victoria

Playlist #3
THE GREATER MANCHESTER (50 years of mancunian music by 50 artists in 50 songs)
(51 tracks, about 3 hours)

There were some problems left. First of all, the exclusions. Not only Oasis, but also Durutti Column, Magazine. A lot of guys from 90s and 00s, like David Gray, Elbow, Lamb, Badly Drawn Boy, Starsailor, Delphic, I Am Kloot, The Ting Tings. And, why not?, Simply Red and Take That, too. They are all in Spotify: why to cut them off? So I made a third playlist. It belongs to the classic 1-artist-1-song category and features what I think are the most important 50 mancunian artists in the last 50 years. All of them. Or almost. From the Greater Manchester area (hello Verve!) and without hybrids (no Monkees, no CSNY, no Thin Lizzy, no Gorillaz, even if the Shaun Ryder-sung Dare is very good). I put the songs in chronological order: take it as a little historical abstract of all that great music Manchester gave us. Before and (especially) after that famous Sex Pistols gig.

Appetizer (bonus track):
1949 Ewan MacColl – Dirty Old Town

The list:
1963 Herman's Hermits – I'm Into Something Good
1964 Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders – Game Of Love
1965 Freddie & The Dreamers – You Were Made For Me
1969 The Hollies – He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother
1970 Van Der Graaf Generator – Killer
1977 Barclay James Harvest – Hymn
1977 Elkie Brooks – Pearl's A Singer
1977 Bee Gees – Stayin' Alive
1978 Magazine – Shot By Both Sides
1978 10cc – Dreadlock Holiday
1978 Buzzcocks – Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)?
1979 Sad Café – Every Day Hurts
1980 John Cooper Clarke – Evidently Chickentown
1980 The Durutti Column – Sketch For Summer
1980 The Fall – Totally Wired
1980 Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
1983 New Order – Blue Monday
1986 The Smiths – There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
1986 The Railway Children – Brighter

All Tomorrow's Parties 2010 on Spotify (Matt Groening & Pavement curated events)

All Tomorrow's Parties is not only a song from the historical and bananaesque The Velvet Underground & Nico album. It's also the name of some great non-corporation-oriented music festivals taking place in UK & US since 1999. This year, the festival will feature five events, curated by five different artists: The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, movie director Jim Jarmusch and rock bands Pavement, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Belle & Sebastian (more infos on the official site). Matt Groening's and Pavement's ATP are going to take place next two weekends at Butlin's holiday camp in Minehead, Somerset, UK. Both line-ups are great, both festivals are already sold out... and both of them got the Spotirama treatment in the playlists below. Enjoy!

Mojo Ultimate Jukebox (The 100 Singles You Must Own... on Spotify)

Mojo Ultimate Jukebox - The 100 Singles You Must Own is a little precious book that was given away free with MOJO 113, April 2003. Here it is its presentation:

"Welcome to MOJO's fantasy jukebox, selected by a team of the world's most respected music experts, including Nick Hornby, Jon Savage, Nick Tosches, Lenny Kaye, Colin Escott, Dave Godin, George P. Pelecanos and many more. The brief we gave our stellar panel was simple: if you had a wheezing old Rock-Ola record machine in your bathroom - and, hey, some of the actually have - what are the 10 tunes you'd insist were in there? These sonic delights had to satisfy some tough criteria. First, they had to have been originally available on 7-inch vinyl; they had, where possible, to have a spanking B-side for optimum jukebox longevity; and they had to be available today on CD, just so music lovers who'd consigned their styli to the attic could still sample their majesty. The incoming votes were number crunched by a crack team of mathematicians, and the results appear here, like all great beauty contests in reverse order. It's a countdown to sonic nirvana... with a surprise Top 10".

What about music lovers who'd even consigned their CD styli in favour of the digital inferno? Well, they maybe can appreciate this Spotify version of the sonic nirvana. In vintage double-style: a delighting and miraculously almost-complete A-side and a spanking, obscure and little more flawed B-side. Enjoy the celestial jukebox! :o)

Vedderology (a collection of non-Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder songs)

After have been one of my high school stars in the grunge years, Pearl Jam have become my favourite live band. I saw them five times (Milan 1996, Verona 2006, Milan 2006, Turin 2006, Berlin 2009), Milan 2006 is still a strong candidate for the best concert of my life and I'm working to see them this year again (Werchter, maybe...).

Today I will start a short series of playlist dedicated to them. The ouverture is for the singer, Eddie Vedder, and for his several extra-Pearl Jam collaborations. Beginning with the memorable Hunger Strike in Temple of the Dog album, going through movie soundtracks (Dead Man Walking, I'm Not There, the complete Into the Wild), live albums (Neil Finn and friends' 7 Worlds Collide), collaborations (Cat Power, Bad Religion, former PJ drummer Jack Irons).

It's not a complete collection: some great stuff is missing, like You've Got To Hide Your Love Away from I Am Sam soundtrack or Ramones' cover I Believe in Miracles. In some tracks Vedder is the lead singer, in others he just provides backing vocals, others are duets. Enjoy!
